  • Mounting of fridge slide

Was wondering how people mount their fridge slides ?? I don't want to drill holes direct through the rear cargo area so was thinking of some MDF board use the tie down points to secure this then using nuts and bolts coming up from underneath to mount the slide to the MDF and counter sink the bolt holes underneath so not to rub on metal floor of cargo area and so the MDF sits flush. Then cover with marine carpet. Does this sound the way to go ?? Or have others mounted their slides a better way. I'm also going to make it easy to remove flooring if needed... Cheers Steve

You can also use T-nuts instead of countersunk bolts. Then you can remove the fridge slide without removing the MDF/fasle floor.

I used the threaded version of these. Forgotten what they are called but you drill a 9mm hole in the ply / mdf and screw them in using an Allen key and the you have an M6 nut in the ply. I think I mention them in my build, sorry iPad and too many Asahis. It's been a tough day. Lost a new Titliest flying at the green from 220m. Perfect 4 iron too. Hit the edge of the green and dropped back into the water. I'm absolutely gutted. Thought it was going to roll up to the pin for an easy eagle putt.

I use T nuts and some clips to hold down the false floor and T nuts to bolt down the slide.
When fitting them screw in a bolt from reverse side and tension up then use a socket or similar over the nut when hammering it in. This ensures the nut goes in square.

End of second link shows the clips I used to hold floor down using original tiedowns.

Thankyou for the link Sparksy, I like the idea of those clips. Im useless when it comes to this type of stuff but I may be able to convince one of the maintenance guys at work to make me up some Im sure for a carton lol... Also do you think MDF is the way to go or is there some thing better ?? Yours looks like ply ?? if so what thickness did you use ?? ........Cheers Steve

Don't use MDF. It soaks up water and swells, making it weak. Couple that with vibration and the bolts will pull out. Go with 16mm ply and apply a few coats of varnish. If you have lots of money to throw around, then get marine ply.

X2 for not using MDF. Keep it in the Ikea store where it belongs.

I used formply about 19mm but be wary of it, may be better off with good quality ply or as amts suggested marine ply.
The form ply I used seems to have a smell about it. I think it may be formaldahyde os something else they use in manufacture to prevent mould as its used for forming up concrete. I used it because it was a end of stock at bunnings and I got a 2400mm sheet for $20. Not sure if that was money well spent.
Mine still had a smell even after a few months but covering it with carpet it seems ok now.

The clips are easy to knock up .
For the ply floor I made up a template out of heavy cardboard cut to shape of floor then with a soft hammer tapped the cardboard around where the tiedowns were. This made a impression in the cardboard and then just cut a slot where the tiedown is hinged. Transfer cardboard pattern onto ply and your set.

dimensions of clips. I made them up out of 2mm stainless but mild steel would work.

If you dont have any luck getting them made PM me and Ill knock some up for you.

Wholy shit that's a big difference, no wonder the old man use to go off when I was little and when he wasn't looking I'd be punching holes with a hammer & nails into his sheets of ply he was using when he was making his speed boats lol NOW I know why, think the normal ply's looking fine lol, by the time I cover it with marine grey carpet it will be protected anyway, but I will still give it a coat of varnish just to seal it all up..............Cheers Steve

Well I have lashed out and finally got a fridge. It's an ARB 60lt with an ARB fridge slide and tie down system. I made up a mounting system, see the photos and video of my install. I will be looking at getting a second fridge in Apr - May gearing up for my big trip in Aug - Sep.
