  • What's that sound? (NOT A GAME)

    Hey guys,

A few weeks ago i noticed a 'whine' kind of sound coming from the front end of the Prado, when i took it to my mechanic for its major 160k service i mentioned it and he couldn't see or hear anything (noise is every now and then).

Today after driving 2 hours home when i pulled in the driveway i could hear the same whine again so this time i took a quick recording of what it sounds like hoping someone may be able to shed some light so i can get this fixed. The sound seems to me like it it coming from the front of the engine and is loudest when you are under say the bashplate at the front. The recording i took is from under the bash plate and then moves to near the grill. I don't know if its the fan as im not an expert on this stuff but its something that happens pretty sporatically so it has me stuffed..

Please have a listen and hopefully someone could help me..

(i didn't post this in the 120 section as i wanted it noticed and hopefully someone with OR without 120 can help me)

Click the black box above and it will take you to photobucket where video is hosted. At the 0:07 mark is where the noise is really obvious.
    Thankyou.

no, its the sound that is quite prominent the whole way through now that i listen to it again. It may kind of sound like just the engine running but if you listen a few times it isn't.. Its probably no more obvious at 0:07 then it is from the start but it is basically the first noise you can hear.

I did record a much longer one as a voice memo on my phone, does anyone know where to host those to post up?

        Gday jhiace

It sorta sounds like the A/C compressor?

Try with A/C then switch it off!

        Cheers

I checked a/c first and with it both on and off it made no difference. It is idle affected though

Obviously, us old fellas with damaged hearing (courtesy of Australian Defence Force in my case) can't hear any whining at all amongst that noise! Sorry, can't help.

Dave, the noise is the whine.. I agree it's hard because of the engine running but it has to.

If any of you are familiar with the old commodore whine vn - vt then it sounds the same as that!

In the commodore it would be the viscous fan stuffed. Not sure in the Prado

My thoughts were that it was the fan...

Serpentine belts can also whine a bit, especially when new.

Dropped into the mechanics this arfternoon and it looks like its a bearing in one of the belt pulleys.. Going in in Wednesday to find out which one it is.

Jhiace, does it only happen at idle?

Octane, no it happens all the time and gets louder with revs..

Hopefully it's not an expensive fix

Took the prado to the mechanic today. The plan was to drop the belt and check the pulleys to find the faulty one, nothing! Not a peep out of then. They then discovered a small leak from the water pump so figured that must be it. After a few hinder dollars were spent the water pump was replaced and alas not the problem. Not very happy about it so now to try somewhere new.. They seem to think its coming from the passenger side of the motor and they reckon its the a/c compressor or alternator... The sound is much worse today, even before going to the mechanic..
