Well I guess as a positive the water pump needed replacing anyway!

The other likely culprits are as you said the alternator and/or AC compressor. In a previous car my AC compressor front bearings died after water inundation, very common.

They asked about the water, but I haven't been through any deep water.. Maybe 40cm at the deepest going slow and other then that it's only been wet roads in heavy rain.

Mine died after a 'reasonable' creek crossing. Somewhere around Wellington Dam. The front seal and bearing chopped out in about a week from sandy water. Guess the creek was maybe 500 deep. And the AC comp was a lot higher than that. And I didn't stop so the water wouldn't have been high in the engine bay. May have been a cumulative effect.

The whine only increases with rpm irrelevant of a/c which is why I too don't think it's a/c related... Might be best to go for a drive to see my auto elec mate.

Well, the sound has been identified and fixed.

It was as simple as the bottom belt tensioning pulley having stuffed bearings. Using a long screwdriver as a stethascope this was easily pinpointed and my mate replaced it in 10 minutes for me free of charge!

Will never go back to the knob head mechanics i originally went too, they told me they did the old screwdriver trick too! Clearly not!

Good result. Hmmm I wonder sometimes whether these type of guys just send us away because they can't be bothered with small jobs. Looks like they wont get any jobs now.

Mechanic should have found that when they pulled the belt off and blamed the water pump *Grrr*
