  • Poor Sods - Stolen Prado

    Guys,

I'm currently in the market for a new D4D Prado and as such was down at a large local dealer here in Brisbane on Friday. I've met the salesman before and on arrival to meet him again for a test drive of a vehicle saw that he was talking to two QLD Police officers who were taking notes.

Once he finished we started to talk and I asked him if there had been some problems in the yard? He said no, the police were looking for information on what parts from Prado Grande's are numbered and can be traced if found. Turns out a couple of tourists from Macedonia had arrived in Australia and bought themselves a brand new Prado Grande to travel around the country with. Unfortunately while fueling it up, they both proceeded inside the servo and left the keys in the ignition. Bingo, no Prado, it's gone. Poors sods had no insurance either.

They were obviously just careless or didn't realise that you should expect thieves anywhere. Either way, a holiday and trip to completely forget.

    Cheers,

    Pedro

    Oh, that's a sad story.

It buggers me that every time I leave the car (especially after refueling) that I must remember to lock it. I usually remember after walking a few paces... If it weren't for the remote-thingy, I would possibly be too lazy to walk back to the car to lock it with the key! ops:

    Thank goodness for technology!

Which reminds me about APRS. I must look into that more closely one day.

I like the James Bond idea of a car alarm - the car explodes if broken into. Car and thief blown to smithereens.

If I can't have it, then neither can you, you bloody low-life thief...

Heard muttering to self: "It must be old age making me this cranky..."

        Stolen Prado.

Let this be a lesson to all of us that choose to work hard for the things we have.I for one cannot afford the comprehensive insurance for my Prado,I do have cover for others. This alone keeps me on my toes.I have factory and after market alarm systems as well as a hidden dissable switch protecting my prado and I never leave the keys in it ever.Lets hope the police catch this scumbag and dissable his 4+4 activities.Keep your ears and eyes open Brisbane , we just may be able to help apprehend this one.

          I don't understand....

You have a $80,000 car but can't afford $1,000 a year in insurance?

My optioned up, 9 month old pverty pack $67K (incl extras) D4D costs me $750 a year.

            I pay $750 for a Grande.
I wouldn't drive a vehicle on the road without comprehensive insurance, the risk is just too great.

I've never bought comprehensive, only ever 3rd party property. The prado is the 4th and most valuable car I've had, but it only owes me about $11k or so, and the insurance company I was getting a quote from (can't remember which) couldn't insure it for less than $22k or so. I can't remember what the premium was...

Well, I didn't want to boast but:

Missus works at RAC so 50% Family discount applies, so real cost is $380 a year.

Yeah, that comes in handy eh!

I also worked for the RAC and was receiving that discount, and for some reason, I still am?! Not that I'm complaining!

Which department does your wife work for? I probably know her? Was there for 7 odd years.

Sadly after dealings I and other friends have had with the RAA (SA branch) I wouldn't insure a whipper snipper with them nowadays.. And from memory my customer feedback to them was worded a bit stiffer.. :P Hopefully they are better in your state. 8)
There is plenty of cheaper insurance, but I wanted to make sure it was 100% covered off road and in severe 4wd situations.
My cheapest quote was $430 but that was AAMI who I rate even lower than the RAA... took 3 years with those "imbeciles" to fix 3 grand of damage on one of my other vehicles.

I won't give her surname but the handbrake is Manuela, underwriting at Perth HO. Worked a fair bit on consignment at Joondalup in late 06 / early 07 as well.

Been at RAC for approx 6 years. Prior to that worked at GIO for 5 or so years, when things were really slack. God bless GIO and their redundancy package, $30K severance pay with little tax, you bewty! + freebie shares.

Missus was also in the Lotto Syndicate at RAC (22 members) that won Division 1, long weekend Jackpot of $30M, approx June 06. $1.5M was the win, split down to $75K each.

Hence we sold the Kia Sorrento (bought new) and 2000 Corolla for the 07 D4D and Mazda 3 SP23.

Manuela left RAC, Mar 07. We had a Prem baby born at 22 weeks and 680g. She is 9 months old now and doing beautifully. The happiest child I've ever seen. Has given us a new lease on life.

Family discount, my understanding is that it applies for 2 years after ceasing employment and then if returning and working for a continous 3 months (even part-time) the 2 year deal gets reset again. Here's hoping she wants to go back to work!

Anyway, sorry for the life story. Do you know Manuela?

                        Yep sure do!

When I left she was preggaz!!

                        Good luck to ya's.

You'll have to drop my name. I was the Facilities Manager at the old head office in Adelaide Terrace and used to go to all of the branches regularly especially Joondalup to sort old Taffy out. I took up another position when we moved to the new HO. I was then running the RAC Vehicle Inspections Department from Balcatta, but still used to drop into HO and Joondalup on a regular basis.

I remember that lotto win too! Nice one.

Will she be going back to RAC?

Still drop in from time to time and say hi to my old work mates. Were a good mob to work with.

                        Mitch

P.S. Sorry to highjack this thread PedroD!

To up the creek. Just to help you under stand. My prado is a 2000 model not a 2007 model so,I paid $17.ooo for her after I came into some good fortune,I also purchased a home, this left me in some debt but not a lot. So with weekly and annual payments for rego, third party, phone, power ,food, rates, home loan, fuel and other things I have little or no problem understanding how I cannot afford comprehensive insurance for my much loved prado. However you can sleep easy knowing that Iat least have third party accident insurance that I can afford, just.
