Fridge/Freezer set-up for touring

Hi All


As per my intro post (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...rly-retirement) we are touring Australia for 12 mths starting Jan '14. We are are family of 4 and currently have a 47L ARB fridge /or Freezer.


I'm seeking opinions from anyone that has toured for an extended period of time in regards to how much fridge space they feel we might need.
I don't think the 47L will be enough and am considering a 60 or 70L fridge+freezer (like an Evakool) in addition.


This will provide around 30L of freezer and 75L of fridge. Is this overkill, not enough, or just right.
I know everyone will have their own opinions and experiences, let's here them...

Depends on how remote you'll be. I found that my 52 ltr was barely enough for 2 for one week of self sufficiency. I'd go your 2nd option if that's the case if you have the room.

I have a Waeco CF 50 and a CF18. The latter is used as a freezer and the former for beer etc.
Photoa attached shows the 2 side by side with the battery in the background.

Since photo taken, have put in a fridge slide for the CF50 , and there is ample room for the freezer unit.

Yeah good call Oz, I have very little research on distance between supplies but thinking 10 days self-suffiency would be a good rule of thumb?
The 47L is spot-on for 3-7 days but 365???

That's the other option, have the 47L as the fridge and a smaller freezer. But, I figure if we have the space we'll appreciate the extra fridge room - I figure things we compromise on during shorter trips will become a major annoyance on longer ones.

I am gearing up to my first buy of 4x4 and camper trailer in September, but my approach (after much research including on here and other sites) is that I will go with an ARB 47l plus a good quality esky.

Trev, I think this is really a question of convenience. Remember a time when we all used Eskis? And survived?

I then graduated too 27l engel, I could make this work for a week with three people no problem.

Then a got a 50l waeco at first it was deluxe! Then I started to take the waeco + the engel as a freezer.

Now I'm thinking about a bigger fridge....

So it all depends on how much you want to cycle drinks through the fridge, and what sort of food you want to buy.

Does anyone have any experience with the Waeco CFX65DZ Dual Zone fridge? I was looking at a Techniice single zone fridge but BCF have 25% off all camping equipment which finishes today and includes the Waecos.

It would save having to carry 2 fridges and there's only 2 of us to cater for.

We run the CFX65 as a fridge for day 2 day stuff and put in a CFX30 as a freezer on longer trips works well. If you just run the fridge put frozens on the bottom them some news paper on top it helps keep it frozen and stuff on top not

So you do that in your CFX65? Mr Fido is keen on the dual zone idea of the CFX65DZ and it's not much more than the CFX65. I'm just wondering if there are any drawbacks to the dual zone approach.

I used to do it on my old CF50 and it worked fine with the DZ fridge you loose space with the divider and smaller baskets.

It doesn't look like you lose that much space, the specs list 61 litres for the CFX65DZ and 65 litres for the CFX65. The only thing I can't tell from the website is whether the divider between fridge and freezer is removable like it was on the old CF50DZ for when you want to run it as just a fridge. I'll give BCF a call and check that out before ordering.

I think you can remove the divider to turn it into a fridge but the baskets are shaped for the divider in so to get max room ie length you will need to take the baskets out, Then you have to find somewhere to store the baskets and divider if your away from home (taking up more room in the back). Thats why we went for the two fridges, Plus we have two Prados so leave a fridge in each until we go away.
