  • Anyone know about Aussie Campers & Trailers?

    Hi all,

My family and I have just decided its time to sell the house and do the big lap around our great country.
We are looking to buy a camper trailer and I would like to know if anyone has looked at / owns / or knows about the Aussie Deluxe Campertrailer made in Acacia Ridge by Aussie Campers & Trailers
    http://www.aussiecampersandtrailers....ie-deluxe.html

I know they are made O.S. and put together in oz, but not sure on the quality or reputation of the company as there are NO reviews on the web that I can find, which makes me uneasy....

Can't help with that brand but these guys in Caloundra http://www.australianoffroad.com.au/ have a very good reputation and a wide range of models/options.

        Hi Owen

Congrats on the decision - we've decided to do the same and are in the planning process as well.

I have no experience with the company you are asking about, however be aware that hard floor trailers have advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages are well documented - the disadvantages (in my view) are primarily they lack the storage space of a soft floor.

We've used Kimberley Kampers (one of the top of the line Hard Floors) and loved it, apart from storage. We had to pack stuff on top of the hard-floor when travelling which had to be loaded/unloaded each time the tent went up. In saying that the set-up/down process is so easy and quick it probably didn't really matter. I'm not sure how many in your group but if it's more than 2 you may want to make sure it suits your needs.

My concern with the company you are looking at is how professional are they - there are a number of spelling and grammatical errors from my quick glance of the site - wouldn't give me a lot of confidence in their attention to detail.

As others have said - myswag.org - is a wealth of info.

        Good luck!

            Thanks Trev,

When are you planning to leave Bisbane and what are you using for mobile accommodation?

              Hi Owen

Most likely mid Jan 2014 and return mid December 2014 - with a return to work Jan 2015.
We think we'll head south for a few months before heading north through the centre around May. Then spend the winter around the Gulf / Top-End / Kimberley, before proceeding down the west coast and around the bottom before heading home.

We're towing a 'Ezy Kamper' soft floor (now out of business from what I can gather). It's a 13 yo 9ft soft floor with independent suspension and seems to be pretty bullet proof.

I had a look at the australiaoffroad site and the campers look awesome in design and quality but as we dont want to come home Broke As A Joke after our 'BIG LAP' and dont want to have to sell the camper on our return they are unfortunaly out of our price range.

                  Hi Trev

                  Sounds like a good plan.

I am madly madly renovating my house and getting it ready to put on the market so we can make tracks and head north for the Cape and then westward from there.

I hope to get it on the market in the next 4-6 weeks and I am in the process of sorting the Prado out and planning.

Keep in touch, you never know we may cross paths out there

That looks ok. Different to ours, Challenge Camper Deluxe soft floor, and also different to other hard floors.
Keep doing home work until your happy as there are so many different types because no one has made the perfect one yet.
Each one has different features, quirky things, compromises, good points and bad. Then also cost.
The best one out there is the one you are happy with.

We have had ours for 8 years, and what was perfect for us then (2 growing kids) is now not so practical when they are not with us. Eg we got extra length tent and annex in heavier canvas, now it's too much room and weight etc..
And we are still to find the perfect lighting setup, although the KORR LED lights might be next..

Storage is also a big consideration. Eg if its just the two of you you will have more room in the car so the campers storage is not so important, but if your back seat has two more bodies to feed and clothe then it is more advantageous to have more storage out of the car..

Good luck and no doubt you will enjoy it.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Hey Owen. I'd love to take a big trip like you're planning. It's just not feasible for us at the moment. However, I think you should seriously consider where exactly your trip around Australia will take you. If you plan on getting off the beaten track, then I personally wouldn't put my faith in any of the cheaper designs. Corrugations etc will test your trailer to its limits, and the cheaper ones just aren't up to the task of spending a lot of time out in remote places. I have a cheaper trailer (i.e., @7k new) and I've taken it offroad, but I wouldn't dream of doing a lap of Australia on anything other than the occasional unsealed road. I just don't think it would stand the test of time. If I were you, I would be looking for a well made second hand unit given that - Im guessing - you don't want to go over the 10k mark. If you are happy to go over this amount, then you could consider the Cub hard floor offroad campers second hand. We hired hard floor and soft floor campers before we bought. We have two teenage sons + canine, and the hard floors just weren't really family friendly enough in terms of size. So, we went with the soft floor, and we can get that up real quick without the annex for overnighters, and if you install a slide out storage box etc, then they are a really flexible design in my opinion and a better option for family groups. A few goodies that I would look out for in a second hand trailer are fully wired deep-cycle battery system for running lights etc; electric water pump (not the manual hand type); electric brakes (i'm not a fan of cable/mechanical systems); about 100 odd litres of water underneath, or a 70L tank with room for two jerries, and at least two small gas bottles for running the kitchen stove. Also, you want the kitchen to have good storage areas that can be closed when traveling. In terms of suspension, I'm still a fan of leaf springs, but independent is good, though you'll pay a lot more.

Have a look for second hand units here: http://www.campertrailers.org/camper_trader.htm
