  • 12V oven - reviews and recommendations?

I am thinking about a 12V oven for long trips. The two that I've seen are :
    Dick Smith http://dicksmith.com.au/product/M4515/
    Travel Buddy http://12-24voltovens.com.au/

I haven't been able to find anything on the forum about these so have a few Qs:
Does anyone have any experience with them? if so which? Pros/cons?

Dick Smith is about 20% of the price of Travel Buddy but is smaller. I have a concern about the Travel Buddy as it looks like the door gets hot which I am not sure I'd like in a fully packed vehicle. The Dick Smith one seems to be more enclosed so potentially safer. I'm happy to check these out instore but always better to get the opinion of people who've used them in anger.

I nearly bought a Travel Buddy the other night. Just b4 I did though, I did a search for reviews on 12v ovens which was very helpful.

The downside to the DS version is the long heating time. I found a forum (can't remember which one but you should just be able to do a search), where someone bought 2 DS ovens and wired 2 bottom halves together. As the bottom half has the element, combining 2 of them increased the heating temp. They did state that cooking time didn't decrease too much, from memory only about 10 minutes.

Although the Travel Buddy is around $210, it seems a bit more versatile. My problem is how/where to secure it when in use and when on the go.

Google is your friend, it may be the best way to help make a decision.

Yes, I usually Google things to death before buying but can't find much on the Dick Smith oven yet and It's also good to get opinions from trustworthy sources like PP

I bought the Dick smith one several years ago, still use it. I wrap some steak with onions in some ali foil ,put in the bottom, a small tin of peas and a tin of spuds in it , still in the tin open when hot. Put them in at lunch time and tea/dinner is cooked by the time you stop for dinner. Works good if your doing a long drive somewhere . You do need the engine running while using it or the battery dies. You can put it anywhere when using it ,the outside does not get hot . $40 ?? they are on special at $25 at times if you keep watch.

Still like the Travel Buddy though.

I have had a Dick Smith oven for about three years now they do work good but do draw a fair bit of power, ok if you are driving and want something hot like pies, sausage rolls along the way or when you reach your destination. Since others in my 4WD club have seen us munching on a hot pie or something in the middle of nowhere they have also bought one and everyone I know has been extremely happy with them.

Thanks Ron and others for the input. Might have to wait for the next sale @ DS. At anything <$40 it's worth giving one a go.

Never thought about a 12 volt oven before, after reading here and other sites, sounds like a good idea on big trips, as Ian said at under $40 its worth giving it a go.

                  Cheers Derek
