  • NSW Rego rip off

    How's this guys,

I just spoke with my brother who is in the process of renewing his rego on his car. He rang a few insurance companies regarding his CTP Greenslip. They all asked if he'd lost any demerit points in the last 2 years. He said yes, 3 points about eighteen months ago for 6k over the limit. She then said, $370 cost just went to $699! She said that from about 3 weeks ago the cost goes up for any demerit points within 2 years! She said that all demerits are are checked from the RTA before the Greenslip is priced.
If this is correct it's CRIMINAL and all motorist need to yell very loud.

It is a ripoff Rego / grenslips in NSW
We just recently had to rego the daughters car, and as she had moved just recently from Newcastle to Brisbane to completed Uni, we found for a Mazda 3 [2009] 21year driver no accos or demirits [proud of her for that achievement] the rego /greenslip was NSW $1090 and Qld $668 ,so is a no brainer where to rego the car, and am now considering moving a few other regos to Qld to save some money. Fortunately we have an address up on the Sunshine Coast so we can use that.

Have i got this right ?
You pay money for rego then you ring around different insurance companys for a greenslip that covers you for Compulsory Third Party. ?
In VIC we dont get that option of going around and finding cheaper insurance. We all pay the Transport Accident commission the same amount. By car size i think

Correct. But because its compulsory insurance there isn't really any competition. The compensation available has also in the process of being adjusted way down. This is supposed to lower the cost, but of course the price keeps going up. Legalised extortion anyone?

The NSW gov handled the CTP up until about 20 yrs ago I think. They then farmed it out to the private sector and the costs dropped quite a bit but like any other insurance has been steadily creeping up.

I don't feel bad having my vehicles registered to a country address , but insured to my actual address . Saves me about a grand a year . I can't see why I should pay more because I live in the city . It doesn't change the way I drive one bit and so shouldn't change what I pay for a CTP green slip . The real rip of is what motorcyclists pay for a green slip . Especially since they are legally not usually at fault and are usually the recipient of the injuries .
