Still not as good as my Prado but tempting when we went to buy it and if I needed payload and 3000kg towing it could have been a done deal. Chuck an auto in the 70 V8 wagon but, could different story...

I am still hanging out for the Fortuner but I have been told that it now has no plans for Oz in the near future...

Doesn't Ford Ranger = Mazda BT50 give or take panels and specifications?
To my eyes the BT50 looks like something only a mother could love (or my mate who has one).
Ranger looks better to me, but specs don't seem quite up with Mazda.
But both still show tradie ute origins.

What would I replace my 120 with?
Considered 200 $erie$, Range Rover $port, Di$covery 4, but would in the end likely go with Prado 150.

Might also depend on what the caravan eventually gets upgraded to.

Hi Daniel the Pajeros are good value however unless changed in the last few months you only get 2500kg with a 250kg towball down weight to get the 3000kg the towball weight is reduced to 180kg. They also do have a great warranty however now they don't come with the 10 year powertrain warranty for the first owner anymore. The 5 year warranty is still hard to beat though plus it has roadside assist for the full 5 years. They are a good buy secondhand but buying one new gives you the resale blues when you want to get rid of it.

Good point on the all weight, did not even think of checking that... 180kg is a bit poor for 3000kg. Lucky I own 150 VX Prado hey.

For me the replacement was to be a BT50 ,but i am now worried that maybe i should stick with my low tech 120 1kz prado, rather than a modern common rail diesel with sensors that shut a car down if it thinks it might be suffering a hick up. So here is my problem.
Wife has a 12mth old Mazda CX5 with the diesel motor,40000km,driving down the Hume hwy heading to VIC on Friday doing 110km, been going for 550km on the tank of fuel the car suddenly without warning shut down ,she pulled into the breakdown lane and tried to restart ,car just would not go.
NRMA arrived with tilt truck and transported it back to Mazda at Wagga. Car arrived just before the workshop closed but they put the computer onto the car ,no codes or clue, they checked that there was fuel and if it appeared clean which seemed ok. So at the moment they have no idea, and now they are onto Mazda for support which will happen over the next days.
So here i am with an order in for aBT50 a buyer lined up for the Prado [but i am not going to sell until the wifes car is sorted] and me thinking that i may be better hanging onto the Prado [185km] as i know it,and it is reliable. As when i think about it further the 4wd is used only for leisure purposes ,towing the camper etc, travelling at times and to places that a manufacturer workshop maybe not be accessible in the event of a problem with a new fangaled diesel, where as the Prado 1kz i maybe half a chance to seek assistance if required.
You maybe able to tell this has been doing my head in this weekend, with the stuffed car, and do i cancel the ute order [ lose the deposit] ad keep the Prado for a while longer. Ah so do i replace it

another thing to consider with ford vs mazda is the price tag 59390 for the wildtrack in ford and 53 140 for the gt in the mazda, mazda gets the stiffer suspension and ford gets the fugly wheels, basically same inclusions spec wise, easily fixed if you are not keen on the suspension or wheels just change em, also as well next time you see a ranger have a look at the way the std towbar if fitted it hangs down way to low, it looks like an after though where ford have said, geez we better fit a towbar to this, IMO it would really hinder the departure angle, the mazda towbar is alot better but still not great,
but if we all liked the same vehicle it would be a boring world. cheers samo

Rags it is a hard decision to make. When my 120 was diagnosed with injector issues just about the last thing I wanted was another D4D. But all the common rail engines are more sensitive to fuel quality and more reliant on electronics than the old school diesels. The latter is what is liberating the power, torque and economy. When I looked at the rest of the 120 it had done nothing wrong. I had a list much the same as rhs58 without the 200 but add in the Toureg. A dual cab wouldn't cut it so a wagon of sorts. Wife drove the 150 first and that was it. Familiar feel and a few new bits. My 120 had all the driver electronics so that was nothing new. I am really happy with the 150. I couldn't go back to a KZ style of diesel (at the moment I still have a pre common rail Rodeo and a common rail Rodeo so the comparison is easy) and a petrol wasn't on the list, we just don't drive that way these days. Well not in a 4wd anyway.

Reckon a new diesel will astound you and follow the basics with maintenance and prevention and you will be fine. Sounds a bit like you are wondering whether to keep old faithful and change the Mazda for something that isn't a 4wd. That was what I wanted to do when we sold the 90. Turn the 90 into a more dedicated 4wd and buy a shopping cart. Didn't happen and if I did that the shopping cart would sit in the carport and the 4wd would still be the wife's daily driver.

I don't need the shopping cart as the wife CX5 does that as well as serve her as her business car and our run around. I have a BF gas ute provided by my employer so that covers my work/week day transport. Sits in the shed all week and sometimes not used for a fortnight ,maybe 15000km a year max. The 4wd is really just that ,used to travel in,visits to inlaws on sunshine coast, tow the camper, tow a trailer to get firewood, etc .So with the events as previously descibed with the CX5 ,and the new found fear do i tempt fate with a common rail in the 4wd or stick with the old 1kz and also the extra $ 25k i save in the change over costs, maybe spend a few $ on some preventative maintanance items like new exhaust and injector service on the 120 1kz.

one thing i find hard to get into my head is the servicving on the new common rails, my bt just went in for 1k service and i said change the oil and filter and i got a phone call about 15 min later from the dealer saying we dont advise it until its 1 service which is 10k , i thought well ok lets see where this goes, different to the old 1kz with 5k service. i know its the wrong attitude but its under warranty so lets ride the wave, probably fine and dandy but it just something to think about. cheers samo

                              Towing vehicle

I'm thinking about buying a caravan which will weigh in at nearly 2 tonnes so doesn't leave much room for anything else. As the Prado is only rated to 2.5 tonnes if I have to think about selling my beloved Prado what vehicle do people recommend. Unfortunately I can't afford a new 200 series so had a look at the Holden Colorado but am unsure.

I've been heading back home from Barrington Tops and heading home via Thunderbolts Way we cam up behind a reasonable size caravan up some big hills and I said to my co-driver "that's hauling arse, it must be a diesel 200 series". As we got closer we found out it was a BT50! I was surprised how well it was pulling up some of the big hills...
