  • How to charge ipad in vehicle

I have an ipad 4th gen, with lightning plug.
In the vehicle with the screen on & GPS running Etc,
    My chargers don't keep up.
I purchased another 2.1a adapter/USB, it seems to be worse that the other one I have.
I can get the day out of it, But it will go from 100% to 50% or less in the process.
Naturally I would like to keep it charged.
At times it seems to go up, but usually dropping slowly struggling to maintain same charge.

I thought it was the adaptor, not enuff jizzawatts?

    Any help?

Thankx, but shouldn't I be able to charge it in the car?

Generally at home the ipad lasts days & days unless its getting thrashed.

The USB doesn't have enough charge to power it but if u get an adapter for the cig plug it should work. I remember reading something previously in a iPad thread and I found the below when I did a search.

Jaycar sell a dual USB socket that has a 2.1A port on it that is best for charging iPad's as they need a higher power draw. They're about $20. Works perfectly fine for chargin mine.

Their is another thread somewhere also about this, I think the iPhone is .5amp and the pads are 1 amp??? You cannot charge from usb port directly and yes it will struggle to keep up when the navigation is on as well. I charge lime fully at home before I go.

            Hi Matt,

That's what I heard, so that's what I use, cig adaptor.
Even bought another 2.1amp adaptor that it worse, than my original adaptor.
But your right, I have 1000m/amp subs set up, ok for I phone but won't charge I ipad at all.

Does your have lightning plug? Or the old apple plug?

Yes I leave home on 100%, plug it in cig adaptor, and it charges, but less than it uses.
So if your away, you can't leave with it on full as it is drained each day.
What I do at the moment, is close it when I can, close apps at night, leave charging, but managing it is a p.i.t.a.

Mine still has the old plug, 2nd gen so maybe the 4th gen draws more power. It's also wifi only so we don't use it for GPS navigation.

I think the problem is Specific to lightning.
Other ppl just said get 2.1 and u be right. But wrong.
But they all have the old plug I want.
I phone 4 has the old plug, so I have 2 leads, in cars, home, work, more p.i.t.a

I have one of those. 2 actually.
That's my next option, more shit to carry
Covert to 240v then back again, more plugs to come open/unplugged & stop charging.
Your getting close 3rd time lucky?

I'd try an limit the power draw on the device.

Do you have a 3G ipad, and are you using it in areas of poor reception?

Try turning off the LTE (4G) if you don't need to download lots whilst out, and are out of 4G coverage. Makes a huge difference to my iPhone 4 battery life. Maybe even turn mobile wif-fi off?

If you are in areas of poor reception phones will boost their power to tru and find a good signal. I presume an iPad does the same?

Also heard the griffin adaptor works too.

Ahh yes, an apple product? That should work, is this an apple trick to sell special car chargers?
I'd pay $25 if I knew it charged well.
