First thing was a 2 mil movement in temp gauge which was really strange as normally once up to temp it didn't move, sat just under half. Running around town every thing seemed normal (temp gauge only seemed to move when doing highway speeds which was my first warning) but around town didn't move from just under half. Then I checked over flow bottle, radiator every thing looked fine. Then on our way home from the Barrington GTG I noticed movement in temp gauge again. Again when I got home let it cool checked and noticed overflow bottle down a tad but radiator full, no visible leaks but noticed a residue around overflow bottle overflow outlet. Picked up little one from in laws and when I pulled up noticed a bit of moisture on the ground under car, popped bonnet instantly and found overflow bottle chockers and dripping onto ground. I then thought straight away bloody thing is pressurizing itself. I new it was the head but deep down was hoping it wasn't. When I got home my mate come around and put his dye thingy on top o radiator and its suppose to change colours when it picks ups exhaust gases but it didn't.
I then did the usual cheap things first pulled the radiator out, had it checked cleaned etc and he said was as good as new prior to giving it to him anyway. Changed over thermostat luckily the mechanic did that as it was a prick of a job. Then clutch coupling on fan, hoses etc thinking maybe one of them was sucking itself in or some thing but again deep down I new what it was.
Again showed no symptoms only when it was on highway/freeway so my mate come with me and I gave it some down the freeway making it work hard pulled over bingo overflow bottle pressurizing again so while hot using extreme caution my mate put the thing back on radiator outlet again and that's when the dye changed colour indicating exhaust gasses in the cooling system. Apparently it was only showing signs at high speeds cause the crack would open up and let the gases in. Took a little while to diagnose 100% but no other choice then to repair it properly. I sold it over two years ago to a member on here and I told her
all about it and was still under warranty when I sold it to her and till this day
she has had no further issues with it...cheers steve
