  • Winch rope

    Guys,

I'm thinking about replacing my steel winch cable with rope. What to you recommend as the best thickness and lenght?

Yep me too....no probs....they all have pros and cons but synthetic rope is a safer object if it decides to snap etc....

        Thanks guys. I was thinking 30 x 10mm but if 30 x 9mm is the norm that's what I'll go with.

somebody mentioned to me that this rope is good - WARN Spydura Synthetic winch rope, I've had a look at it in a shop, but to me all of those ropes look the same, he said its UV resistant.

Go with the 10mm. I have the 9mm and the first time I used it I broke it. It was 18 months old and clean. I was moving a tree stump using a snatch block with the Prado sitting on a gravel drive. Go Figure, the breaking strain is supposed to be twice that. These ropes are light but if you need to rely on the winch, put the wire back on.

You're doing something wrong, what brand rope was it and where did you buy it? I have pulled heaps of trees out with my Winchline rope and it hasn't come close to breaking. In fact I've used it to pull more trees out than actual recoveries.

Next time you want to move a tree stump try some ANFO. One litre per 100kg of stump should work fine.

At least it then becomes the neighbours problem.

Rope can be an issue if the winch gets too hot. It just melts. Not sure how often this happens.

It doesn't happen unless you power out under load but your winch isn't designed for that anyway.

I don't know how I haven't broken my winch. I have given it a real hard time on too many occasions. Rope it looking a little rough but still going strong.
