Iantz,Originally posted by iantz View PostBrains - how many drinks can you fit in something that size (47l) when you are packed with food? Did you just put a few cans in at a time? The boys are always drinking, but I like at least a 6-pack to be cold just in case I need more than one...
With the food we had about 3 bottles of water and about 6 - 7 cans at a time that we just kept replacing every time we removed one.Black 2009 150 Series D4D GXL Prado, TG150 Transfer Case & Actuator Guard, TJM T13 bar, TJM 9.5lb Winch, Airtec Snorkel, TJM steel sidesteps and sidebars, TJM Underbody Protection, TJM XGS Gold Suspension, Tinted, ARB Fridge Freezer, Couplertec System, Foxwing Awning, 80AH Dual battery, 8" indash GPS, Wet Seat seatcovers, GME TX3540, TX3110 & TX680, Maxtrax, Kaymar Dual Wheel Carrier, Breathers, Federal MT's.

I mused over the same thing, 60L or 80L. I already had a 40L Engel and I find it easily large enough for weekenders etc. however I really wanted something a bit bigger for when the 4 of us (Wife and 2 daughters 12 and 14) go on longer trips. I considered the 2 fridge thing (especially for fishing trips to use one for freezing fillets) and I was going to buy another 40L, but 2 40L fridges just take up so much more room than the one 60L. Plus I generally kryovac and place on the bottom anyway so not as big of a deal.
I ended up buying a 60L Engel and combined this with a Twozone compartment - making 80L in total with the zone installed. This gives me the best of both worlds and takes about a minute to install or remove the zone. It fits in the back of the 150 (just and will work much better with the soon to come fridge slide) and I now have greater flexibility. I also like how the Twozone lifts up so you can easily separate eggs, butter etc from the main things down the bottom.
So many different options though and heaps of good ideas in this thread. This setup works for us - will be interesting to see which way you choose to go.2012 D4D GXL Auto - Graphite with some TJM enhancement.

Mine is only a 47l ARB fridge, and though not a 60l or 80l, the design of the ARB fridges is well thought out, and it is surprising how much stuff can be put in there with some careful planning. The best thing about the 47l is that it is taller than the 60 and 80l models, so there is more room to the side for other luggage, or maybe get two fridges?
That siad, I am doing a 5 week trip shortly with SWMBO and our 3 kids, and camping the whole way, which will be the first long term test for the 47l fridge, so will be interesting to see how we go.2009 White KDJ120R Manual fitted out for family camping and touring - See my Rig Build at http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27887-Smithy-s-Rig-Build

My 80L fitted in the back of the 120 with both handles on however with no cargo barrier. With a barrier you would probably have to remove the rear handles.Originally posted by Tazdevil View PostIt would be a tight fit. With the handle on, the Cargo Barrier would need to be almost vertical and this then makes the seat backs sit vertical which then makes for an uncomfortable ride for the kids.
I actually love the 80l even though it is just 2 of us cause when travelling we could then do a big shop at the supermarket and not be slaves to small town high prices. When we did our half lap around Oz we filled the freezer section with cryovaced meat before we left melbourne and this lasted us 10 weeks and saved a heap of money.
I am currently looking at the Iron Man Ice cube 65 litre double door if they ever have any in stock"Drive down that track really fast, if something gets in your way turn"

Plenty of good ideas coming though here guys. I think the conclusion so far is that 60L is probably a good size for a family. I know others are running smaller units, but it seems there are some limitations like how long you can go off the one fridge, and more importantly, how many beverages can be stored in there at the same time! Plenty of people are doing it ok around the 50L mark it seems.
I'll communicate with the Mrs about the info here and that I think 60L is the go. I have a feeling though that she'll say bigger is always better and then I'll say it's what you do with the size you have that counts. But being the greedy girl she is, I may end up with an 80L yet!

i went out on a limb last year and bought one of the Primus Mammoth 65L dual zone fridges. What I like is that one side can be fridge or freezer, both fridge or both freezer. With the two lids its great one is my beer/drinks side and one food side. When you drink during the night your only opening one side instead of letting all the cool air out of the whole fridge. It runs the danfoss compressor and I paid $1100 with a transit bag etc from tentworld. I am wrapped, since getting it 3 of my mates have bought one also, one bought the big 92L one and he is wrapped too. Great quality and work really well!
Tentworld were good to deal with and as I said $1100 with the bag is a good deal. They are a quality solid fridge

They actually have the waeco ccx 65L on sale for $1199 also

I like the solid construction of the primus and dual zones enough to still choose it again over a waeco or engel but thats a personal preference.Last edited by prado2004; 27-08-2013, 11:30 AM.2012 4dr JK wrangler, 3.5" AEV lift, AEV mags, 35" muddies, front/rear arb bars, tjm sliders, pioneer platform and some other goodies
