  • Editing Posts

In the past we have always been able to edit any of our posts. I regularly go back and edit the first post in my Rig Build adding information and post numbers of the latest mods to make it easy for others and myself to find things in what is now quite a long thread.

I also often fix typo's as I tend to type too fast and check poorly. It now seems we have a time limit on how long we have to edit a post! posts from only a day or so ago can no longer be editied. I noticed this when going to add some extra photos into a reserved post in my rear bar thread, but am no longer able to edit it.

I reckon I could have a pretty good guess at the reason for this change. Its a pity if all of us are getting rights removed because of the actions of a rogue member.

    Cheers Andrew

Aj, Mate thanks for the confirmation.
I went to do something yesterday and could not. Was going to ask but got side tracked.
So why have we lost our right to amend our own post's? So freedom of speech and our own rights have now been eradicated. Why weren't we notified of these changes?
I do not tend to get in to this side of thing but this has gone too far.
Give us our right to edit our own post's back please!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SOL.

Hadn't noticed this restriction until you highlighted it Andrew. That's a real bugger! Particularly with regards to the likes of a build or For Sale thread that you need to update/edit. Hopefully applying to a Mod to re-enable the thread for editing when required may overcome this?

Glad you brought it up AJ, I thought it was just me!

I do the same and edit the first post of my build thread, apparently not anymore though.

I think the restrictions make sense for the majority of posts, but I'm going to need a solution for a couple of the threads which I maintain.
          - 90 Series Suspension Guide
          - My build up; the index on first page

Both of these threads are very helpful to new Prado owners, but over time that information will be difficult to access with this restriction in place.

Is this a reaction to some PPers editing posts after a dummy spit? I thought such posts could be restored by mods? The loss of the edit function will increase build threads and make them a mess. I have edited my build original posts numerous times to update what has been done. Please restore this option.

              Editing Posts

Aj I would have preferred a pm to the mod team on this.
But yes seeing as its now well out in the open..

Editing privileges are for two days ( not one as stated) after doing a post, more than enough time to correct mistakes.

Yes this is in place currently because of a few rogue members maliciously deleting posts.
And also a number of members threatening to remove all their posts. You know who you are..

It is not our intention to keep this in play permanently and we are looking at options to return it to full time editing.
Unfortunately as of the damage that was being done by members that are now on a very lengthy holiday, this had to be put in place..

Yes we can restore deleted items and also edited posts. But there are side effects to it that are somewhat annoying.. these issues need not concern you all, we are dealing with it at an upper level.

We have already been dealing with this on a one by one basis as pm's arrive asking said questions.
Once we have a viable workaround we will return the board to normal.

              On that point:

There are now new infractions in place..
Malicious deletion and editing of posts will automatically gain you strikes.. And a short holiday from the forum.. Get more than a few of these and you automatically ban yourself.. For times between one year and permanent..

We are more than fair on editing and its easy to see when posts are deleted maliciously as was the case last week by stevejau.
A number of you have made threats recently around this and as a result you may find your editing privileges have been changed..

Again we are working on a way to resolve this as easily as we can..

I did think about a PM, but figured others would be thinking the same thing so probably worth talking about. I am not in anyway having a go at the mod team for making the change, as I said its not hard to work out why it was changed. It's just the old story off the minority doing the wrong thing and the majority paying the price.

If we all know that there is active discussion to try and find a better solution then that's cool. Hopefully we can get this privilege returned as I am sure the vast majority of people editing posts do so for the right reasons.

                Cheers Andrew

The Berlin wall eventually got knocked down so there is still hope that things will go back to a level of sanity here too.
These crazy knee jerk reactions are not the solution to the problem. I believe the issue with mods restoring somebodies "removed or deleted" post is a legal one as the poster has "intellectual property" over their post on any forum and has a legal right to remove it. Therefore if a mod re-posts it they may be held accountable. Which is why the right to remove or edit your posts has been removed to re-enforce some form of power to mods/admin and to protect the integrity of the forum.
That being said if you demand to have a post removed by law mods/admin must comply or face legal action (if it were to come to that, and believe me I've seen it happen before). So this reduction of editing capabilities really accomplishes nothing other than to annoy people who are trying to fix minor issues or update rig builds for example.

I understand that some things have happened here of late and many feathers are ruffled and some people are generally pissed off with each other, but don't let your feelings/egos get in the way of what boundaries you are allowed to cross with other people and their rights.

I've been busy with my companies and so have been absent & therefor remained fairly silent through the shit fight but I was a big part of the swmbo thread and I was the person who first brought up a "possum" as part of an innocent comical comment to Steve about how to light a fire I think, but the way this has all panned out is just ridiculous. The reactions/decisions from some people has caused more damage than any swmbo thread or possum stuff ever did and that is the bottom line at the end of the day. Things have just escalated to a point where there's some real anger and contempt about several issues which have come to light in this place.

Everyone needs to get a grip, grow up and try to get back to the way things were before this place turns to complete cr@p. I've been a part of and a founding member of a very big motorbike forum that all went to sh#t after years of success because of stupid stuff like this, and believe me it's not what any of you want to happen here.

Anyway that's enough of a rant from me, mods I truly believe you need to take the first step and trust that members are not children and restore some of their former abilities (and legal rights) and have faith that things will go back to normal. This constant butting of heads and feelings of frustration of members will only go back to normal once people feel respected and valued. The alternative is you we will end up with nothing worth saving.

BTW I think this place great and we just need to give ourselves a bit of a slap up the head, put our testicles & egos back where they belong and get back to normal.

                  Cheers
                  James

I think this is absoluty crazy. I have paid money to be on this site as an show of my commitment. Then to have my rights as a member to edit my post's as I see fit is an absolute disgrace. Notify people of changes. Not encourage PM's so you can have behind the scenes chit chats. This is an open forum make it open and let people know what is going on. If AJ had not of started this topic tonight I would have.
If you want to control things make it you have to pay to get all the rights or some thing like that.

To the person who anonymously neg repped me with the comment " it was you & your mates who caused all the issues". Actually no, it takes two to tango you coward and there was a lot more going on from other parties to stir sh%t up. "my mates" and me were asked/told not to mention certain furry animals in other threads after we got a bit carried away to which we complied. Then some others (i'm guessing you're one) tried to continue stirring things up by not letting the issue go and continually making comment towards certain people & issues even after they had stopped because you had whatever personal issues with what had previously happened.

As I stated before give yourself a slap and grow up it's yesterdays news.

                        Piggy,

Were you, or are you a school teacher? Serious question. You seem to be treating forum members like children. I'm a member/mod of many car forums (amongst others) and I've never seen a mod behave in this fashion.

If someone wants to leave and delete some of their own posts, so what? Removing everyone else's right to edit their own posts is not the way to handle this situation. So one guy cracked it and left. Move on...

I would suggest you ease up otherwise valuable contributors will leave, which would be a shame.

Newer members here need to understand there is a bit of history with posts being deleted on this forum. A member once deleted nearly 3000 posts, it made a real mess of the forum and ruined lots of valuable threads.

Whilst a reply is being formatted, I can see some people treading on thin ice..

Id suggest rethinking anything your posting as some are borderline personal attacks, some are borderline being seen as malicious deletions of posts that seem derogatory and racist and of nil use to this thread.. tread lightly people..

A reply will be forthcoming.. just have patience..
