Rob that surprises me they're similar in size inside. Yeah the cargo area is a bit small. I loved my td5,series 2 I know but very similar inside, I just got sick of constantly putting my hand in my pocket for repairs. I've never had a series 1 but with less annoying electrics, I would buy a tdi 98 model if I could find a goodie.
For your info the 99- 01 (I think it was) had a cdl but was not hooked up to be used, silly hey. The 01-late 02 did not have a cdl installed at all. LR in their wisdom thought the traction control would be as good and relised their mistake and brought it back in 03 models. The series 1 has cdl standard.
Good luck with whatever ya get Rob but as I said yeah make sure its a good serviced historyed one.

    Cheers Steve

Yeah, I was surprised with the internal dimensions as well... Got to measure a mates TD5 and compare it to the TDi. The only difference is in the Cargo area and the with the depth which is about 100mm deeper in the TD5 than the TDi.... which to me is not worth worrying about when u consider the potential $$ that u "could" end up putting into the TD5 in fixing their potential problems..... if they happen to poke their head up....

Well.... I forgot about this post, so I thought I'd better update it:

I'm not sure what happened, whether I'm going through a mid-life crisis, but I ended up buying the following. I only thought I would keep this for a year or 2, but I'm quite enjoying driving it, so I might be keeping it longer than I 1st thought. It's comfy, very good on fuel but it's no speed machine which is ok by me :

For Gumboots sake.... I hope so . It's an Auto, so all should be good.

Being open diff, it's doesn't go the places the little Zook goes.... Not sure if I will fix that problem or not at this stage....

Then I started researching what would be our next suitable touring vehicle, no particualr rush, but thought it doesn't hit to start early..... Something non-electronic; non-CRD.....

Started seeing/reading quite a few stories of international touring and outback touring and notice quite a few were using the LR Defender 110 Tdi. Started looking at these and even went to look at one.... which ended up being not a good idea as I ended up buying it

It wasn't that dear but was in reasonable condition with the owner recently fixing all the problems with it ($6500 worth of mechanical repairs). It drove pretty well, better than I expected.... the body wasn't perfect, with the usual bush dents, etc, but overall I reckon it might be ok as a touring vehicle. Something that I have at least got a chance of fixing it myself..... Just got to get it registered and drive it to see how I like it and whether I think it can do what I want it to do.....If it does, then the Zook might have to go as having 4 registered cars is a bit over the top....

If I where in the market for a new 4b I would be seriously looking at a Defender, reliability issues would be the real draw back but I am always impressed with them when I see them in my travels.

4 registered vehicles isn't too many, we have 4 and I want another couple

Yeah, I was concerned with the rumors of reliability, but when u look into and research it, depending on which model u looking for, they are not that bad..... With mine being a '96 model, it's fairly basic and hopefully, fairly easy to learn and repair.... time will tell though.... The usual sound proofing and dust sealing is always an issue with these and the A/C is a bit hopeless too. Lucky for me the previous owner spent a bit of time sound proofing it.... Keen to get it registered though as they seem to have real character about them and then there's the 'Defender Wave' as u pass another Defender....

Having 4 registered cars down SA might be a little cheaper down there than it is up here in Qld
                    4cars X ~$700 = $2800.00. What's the cost down in SA for 4 cars??

                    Rob

Yeah, the photo makes it look better than it really is and those tyres never came with it..... but it did come with 5 new 235/85/16 Goodyear Wrangler M/T's..... Which is good as they are the same size as I'm running on the Disco.....

It's about $700 per car over here in WA too Rob. Luckily our fourth car is the camper trailer and it's only $70 😜
I've always liked the look of a Defender and I have a mate who wants one for his next car BUT we had a good look over a new one at the 4wd show and the guild quality didn't impress me or the mrs at all. The whole thing shook when a door was shut and seemed very cheap on the inside. I hoped it was just because people had been climbing in and out of it non stop for three days and not an indication of the way they all are.
Anyways good luck with it and your wallet 😉 there's a truck load of accessories for them if your pockets are deep enough.

Thanks for that.... but we will still be keeping the Prado 150 as it's the missus daily driver. It will also be the tow vehicle for the van & touring until it becomes too small with the kids and the type of remote trips I want to get into....

Time will tell if the Defender will be kept for the more remote stuff.... I've got to become confident in it's durability and
reliability first.... It's all a bit of a trial ATM.... I got to say though, the AULRO is a brilliant forum for all sorts of info; help, etc, and it's one of the most active & large forums that I've come across.... They certainly have a passion for LR's.

I'm still not sure about LR's yet, but I'm still learning about them and how to drive them and learn about their weaknesses, etc, but to date, I've thoroughly enjoyed the Disco and I'm hoping for the same of the Defender once I get it registered...

Re: Deep Pockets - Well, that's one thing I was concerned about, but parts aren't that different in price and it seems a lot of the Forum members simply buy parts (major parts) from the UK and import them cheaper that u can buy here in Aus....

There's a lot of misinformation out there about LR's and it's not until u start researching them that u find this out.....
Are they finished off as good as a Tojo - No.
Are they as reliable as a Tojo - Probably not (not sure about the modern Tojo's).
In Standard form straight off the show room floor are they better off-road than the Tojo's - Yes.
They have that character about them too that I don't reckon Tojo's have....

I just finished watching a National Geographic Doc on the history of the LR's and it's said that out of all the LR's that have been made since 1948, it's estimated that 3/4's of them are still on the road..... Not sure how u proof that though, but interesting never the less
