  • Saftey reminder for when working on your vehicles

A 36-year-old man has been crushed to death while working under his vehicle on the Gold Coast.

The man was working on a front wheel arch outside his home in Elaine Street, Southport when the jack holding up his Landcruiser gave way.

Family members rushed to his aid.

He was still breathing when paramedics arrived, but died before he could be taken to hospital.

‘‘He was pronounced dead at the scene,’’ a police spokeswoman said.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

EDIT: I'm told he leaves behind a wife and two little kids under 4 yrs.

That is absolutely terrible, my heart & condolences goes out to his family & friends.
It is a shocking reminder to all of us, when working on you builds, check once & check twice
      & then approach with caution.
Not saying this was not done here, but YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO SAFE.

Just a quick tip... when working on your vehicle and you have the wheels off, a great place to put them is under chassis on each side (under the drivers / passenger seat when working on the front). Wheel stands can tip and it's great to have the extra safety of the rims to stop the vehicle crushing you underneath. It also keeps them out of the way.

You should NEVER be under a vehicle that is support just by a hydraulic jack. If you need to be under a vehicle, it MUST be supported by a solid device that cannot adjust its height under load. What this means is use hard wood to secure build crib under the side of the vehicle your working under, and LOWER the vehicle until the cribbing is taking all the weight. An easier option is to invest is a set of jack stands for less than $100.

Just to repeat the obvious, you should never put any part of your body under the car whilst it is being supported by a hydraulic jack or other lifting mechanism, until you have secured it with jack stands or the equivalent.
