  • Diesel price at Fraser Island

    Hi,
I know that this has been asked in the past, but prices change. Is the price still $0.40/l more then mainland? Or is it more or less?
    Thank you

  • #2
Yep 40-50 cents more but if u fill up on the mainland a diesel tank will last for a good 7-800 klms on the island. How long r u going for.

      Hi Borec,

I was there 2 weeks ago and diesel was $2.15.

FYI, the weather was crap. Rain and lots of wind. But still great fun

Thanks for the info, we will be going in December/January for two/three weeks (still have to decide). Will be towing dad's Ultimate trailer. Want to spend some time (4-5 nights) at Central Station, then move to Cathedral Beach (probably spend new year there 3-4 nights) then move to Wathumba (2-3 nights) for couple of days and end up at Carree for 2 nights. So I will probably have to refill as there will be lots of driving and towing.
Have not been there since 1991.
I have now tow "kids" 20 and 12. Any suggestions to good itinerary, or spots not to be missed (besides the rally obvious ones, I mean some well less know ones that are hidden out there somewhere and less visited)?

          Thanks

                Hi Borec,

We just got back from Fraser with our Jayco Dove. I imagine the inland tracks would be pretty difficult to tow on. Not so much while you are moving forward, but more if you need to reverse, which is a common occurrence on Fraser's two way/single lane tracks. Be aware that the vehicle going UPhill needs to reverse/give way, regardless of whether they are towing or not (this used to be written in the pamphlet QPWS would give out, but I didn't see it there this time). We caught the barge across at Inskip near low tide and had a very easy run up and down the beach with the camper.

We stayed for 8 days at Cathedrals, which was great! I'd recommend considering staying there longer than youve planned, if you don't mind the driving, as it is really well set up and a nice breeze keeps most of the insects down. On that note, regardless of where you stay take plenty of (good) repellent as the mozzies and blowflies are encouragable in summer.

The water table is quite high at the moment (meaning a lot of the lake's "beaches" are underwater), but MacKenzie was beautiful as always (although not a great deal of beach. Lake Alom was nice to see the turtles, but the loop walking track is underwater in parts. Absolutely don't miss Champagne Pools! Head the a couple of hours after high tide and the swimming will only get better and better. We drove to Sandy Cape one day, which was a nice drive, albeit a little soft near Ngala Rocks bypass. A for Eli Ck, head down the before high tide and spend a few hours there while most people are elsewhere. It is kinda busy around low tide when it is easily accessed.

I'm jealous already! Have a great time!

Never done more than 6-700 Klm's per trip on Fraser, = never used more than about half my fuel. Diesel 120.
Unless your staying for weeks you shouldn't need to buy fuel there.
Note: you will save fuel letting your tyres down in soft sand.
Perfect time to go there about this time of the year, have fun!

Thanks for all the info, I have booked all the sites already, nearly missed out on Cathedral. I think that best mozzie repelent is RID, had it mailed to me to South America when I lived there and used to travel to Amazon, works pretty good.

I always carry another two jerry cans, so i should be OK I guess, even with the trailer.

                          Hello Borec,

Support the locals and buy food and fuel on the island, if everyone just drives past the traders will disappear over time and the facility will be lost forever. How much extra will it cost to top up while you are there and keep the locals in business. Even if you bought 100 litres its only $50.00 extra tops, this is bother all on a great holiday.

                          regards

                          Ross

As much as I would like to support the locals, I need to support my family first, and $50 here and $50 there adds up to quite a lot. We can hardly affort the holiday as it is. I am sure there is plenty of people who can affort to support the locals. Sorry if I sound like a real tight a..., but that is my unfortunate reality. Maybe in the next life I will not have to check the prices and think about buying, and just buy things as I need them.

                              Hello Borec,

Sorry, I forgot that everyone is not on a pension and living kids free. Still pays to buy something local when you can.

regards and have a great holiday.
