  • My Prado is sick

at first I thought I must of picked up some shitty fuel, I've heard a few complaints about the quality of petrol at our local Woolworth's petrol station and that's where I always stopped because it was convenient. I changed service stations and my problems seemed to go away. Then Monday they came back with a vengeance. I have no power! Driving along slow down for a corner, a roundabout then hit the accelerator and nothing then it will kick in just about give you whiplash in the process. It did it when I was trying to merge onto the Bruce Hwy, that was a bit scary. So it is now with my mechanic I told him I didn't want it back until it was fixed. I can see me being involved in a serious accident the way it's behaving.
The reason why I thought it was/is fuel related it that it seems to occur or is at its worst when I'm down to about 1/4 of a tank.

Sounds like severe turbo lag, is it a diesel?

      no it's petrol.
I've got a horrible feeling that what ever the problem is, that it's gonna be expensive and our warranty has just expired.

Could be as simple as a clogged air filter or a clogged fuel filter. I would go for the fuel filter first.

which would fit with my thoughts on dirty fuel being the initial cause. I'll leave it with Peter(my mechanic) and hope it's something that simple.

I hate it when things don't run right, my hubby thought I was being silly saying it wasn't running right. So I told him I'd take his car and he could take mine to work(that never happens) He didn't make it to work, he got about two blocks from home and rang one of his work mates and asked him to pick him up from the mechanics.

Dirty or failing oxygen sensors will cause this behaviour as well. How many kms has it done?

              52,000km on the clock

              it's barely run in

Trogan, I'm blonde. What is my MAF exactly?
My mechanic can't work out whats going on so I've had to take it to Toyota and even the mechanic there is puzzled as to what could be causing the problem.

                  The 120 doesn't have a MAF.

I would say the 120 uses a pressure sensor and not an airflow sensor

                      It's an 04 GX.
The service department have just called. There answer is that it's a faulty fuel guage and it's just been running on fumes. Sounds a little bit funny to me and considering it's only since they changed the fuel sender unit in it about 6 weeks ago that there has been any issues we'll see. I'll go pick it up, fill it up and give it curry for the next few days see if it plays up any more. The new fuel guage should be here next week.

Well today is the day my baby is at Toyota as I type, it's not just the guage that they are replacing it's the whole fuel sensor and sender unit they have decided the one they put in must be faulty. Good news is that because I had issues with this before the warranty expired and that they have a 12 month warranty on the unit it's self, this trip is not costing me a cent.
