  • What ladder system ?

I'm getting sick of climbing up onto my Opposite Lock Rackmaster racks by using the seat, windowsill or spare wheel cover as footholes

Just wondering what ladder systems people use to get up on top?

I am not looking for a rooftop tent - just a better way to get on top to secure/offload loads. My kids get up there now for fun and the paintwork is getting scratched

Would appreciate any pics of any simple/cheap ladder systems out there.

    thanks in advance....

Darren from ATS 4x4 Geelomg had a nice one for sale here and on ebay about 3 weeks ago?

I think he has more as well.

Thats the one, it was on a prado owned by a good client of his.

I noticed it was on Ebay a while ago with some other bits. Might be worth giving him a call.

Ah Joe's car - it was featured in 4WD Monthly a little while back.

He has since sold the car, I believe

I haven't looked inside the door skins to see what kind of bracing is in there - but I wonder if follow Pradopointers would consider this setup strong enough ?

I've read a fair bit about the weak door hinges but this is an accessory that you would only used with the door shut.

The spare wheel mount itself may be quite strong but what about the hinges and the lock side - especially with that super strong plastic guide ?
I knew I had seen that car some where before

If your going to do that why not just open the back door and stand on the shelf if you have one.
That setup would put alot of strain on the door mounts.
I think the ladder up the side would be better but looks ugly.
              What do you think?

Probably best if we can perhaps get a comment from Darren on the strain theory?

I would have personally thought a normal human of say 80-100KG would put about that load upon it. (100kg unless jumping etc).

I am not sure what the load of a door & Spare Wheel/Tyre on a heavy downwards shock (EG rough landing during 4wding/ driving) would put upon the door but I would have thought it would have been similar if not more weight?

Reason I say this is I have just been performing some roof training. Did you know that during a 3 mtr (9-10 foot fall) a Human (75-80kg) puts a load onto a fall arrest harness and all ancillary connected equipment of...(approx)....

I think this same ladder setup appeared on ebay recently. Plus the rear guard.

Yes it is, as the Prado pictured with the lightweight fella on it was upgraded to a cruiser I think?

I really like that setup, but I do see where weight on those already heavily weighed down hinges could be a problem. But Hey That ladder setup is great..

What it needs is a load bearing rating to take the weight and an easy connector to transfer the extra weight to the towbar.

It would have to be an easy to lock in and unlock system to allow reasonable access to the back door and also have to fit also if a trailer/camper was attached.

With that in mind and looking at the current system, I would think that it could be nearly identical to the existing, however at the bottom have and extendable bottom rung with rated pins to lower the bottom rung down to rest on the towbar. Being that towbars ( I think) can take 250kg of downward pressure, this would be the best point to use to take the weight of the door.
