This sort of thing has probably already been discussed, but I'm more after opinions of those that have lived with them for a while.

I'm thinking of removing my second battery from the front of the vehicle. I have to do a lot of re-wiring to fix the previous owners failed attempt at the dual set-up. I'm thinking if I have the second battery in this box, stowed in the back it will be a lot more versatile and I can take it out and use away from the vehicle for extended stays, etc.

Did exactly that with an ARKPAK in the back of the Prado.Runs the fridge and anything else i need and it is also portable so i can take it out and run lights near the camp kitchen.

I have both... And I would say its six of one and half a dozen of the other. When we had the X-Trail I bought a powered battery box pre-wired with a 120Ah AGM battery. It comes with a charge indicator. http://www.aussiebatteriessolar.com....d-battery-box/

When I bought the Prado I bought one with a dual battery already installed, but its only 90Ah.

Having the box is nice at camp coz the you can place the fridge etc wherever you want. With the on-board system you are limited in placement. Especially in caravan parks/small campsites as you can't always get the config you want. But you lose the load space in the back with the battery box. My battery box is about 30kg with battery inside.

Last Oct we went to Treachery Camp for a week but were doing lots of short trips from camp and the onboard wasn't charging enough as we'd drive somewhere, park up and there would be no charging whilst we were off hen go sightseeing. Normally I lift the bonnet and just plug the solar into the dual battery and leave it to top up. It would have been nice to be able to take it out and plugged into the solar and leave it there whilst we were out and about. But if are parked up in one spot camping its not an issue

But the dual battery under the bonnet is just nicely out the way.

So both have benefits in my opinion. But I hardly use the external box now.
