  • Temporary CT wiring...

Hi all, I need a temporary solution for my camper trailer battery box.
Last year I fried my wires on the 'car side' of the battery. Plugged an Anderson Plug in to a dead battery and it blew the fuse and started smoking.
So, what's the cheapest temporary fix for wiring it back up and hopefully not frying it again?
Same setup and take my 240v battery charger to the caravan park

Not sure if cheap and temporary is something you want to do when there is a potential of burning your car and CT to the ground!

I'd redo the lot properly if it was me.

Because when hooked up you have a power source at each end of the cable you need to protect it at both end with a fuse or circuit breaker (I prefer circuit breakers on this set up)

The cable is the most expensive bit I have found a cheap source to be DC cables from domestic PV system installers. You can normally get it pretty cheap as an end of roll or off cut (as cheap as a couple of beers!). It's far superior to automotive cable as it's high quality double insulated and higher strand count flex.

Anderson Plugs and circuit breakers are cheap from places like Jaycar.

I hear ya Mick... when I say temporary I still mean safe.
I'll probably end up with a pre-wired battery box for portability.

For one trip (3months) I survived with just a 240v battery charger because I hadn't finished the wiring. Took a bit of thinking about the logistics but hey we got through!

Try ABR- they sell wiring kits to suit complete with circuit breakers and Anderson plugs. Do it right and do it once. I think he is a sponsor on here- he is certainly a member. Neil

I agree 404... hoping I can do it just once.
I'm pretty sure my wiring survived the fry up and it was just restricted to the fuses near the battery.
I'll need to do some testing to confirm that though.

                Temporary CT wiring...

Was looking more closely at the wiring that's left yesterday...
What would be the benefit of this double wiring?

It's comes from the battery, into an inline fuse, inline connector and then splits like this before going to the CT wiring.

Has it been split to go to a rear cargo area auxiliary point and the CT? if it's just doubled up because the cables a bit on the light gauge size then that's a bit dodgy but probably was ok until you had the flat battery and the current got to it!

Hmm, can't see the pic? I thought if fixed the link. Still up loading via FTP on the iPhone

The double wire is only about 4 or 5 inches long and then is soldered back to single cable.

I'll take some better pics tomorrow.
