Exactly!!!! If I did any repairs on a customers vehicle without asking I'd expect them to be peeved & likely not pay.

Obviously the first choice is to solve it through insurance.
However if not, it sounds like a VCAT case. Not sure how important the email is going to be, for that amount it's reasonable for them to have some evidence you approved.

The car is still at the service centre. He offered to let me take it if I left a credit card imprint, pending insurance approval. I declined as I know that little tactic.
I'm not hopeful of insurance coming through as they can't assess it, but stranger things have happened.Comment

First up go to the police and explain your circumstances along the lines of "Company X won't return my car to me unless I pay for work that wasn't authorised, isn't this blackmail or theft" and see what they have to say. I would go into the station as you have less chance of being fobbed off. I am not saying they will solve your problem but you may get someone sympathetic to your situation and provide you some worthwhile advise.
Secondly - Have you got a spare key. If so just go and take it back. Ask the police what the ramifications of that are.Comment

Go and see the Chamber Magistrate at any Local Court, they will provide you free legal advice and or point you in the right direction of someone who can assist. The police wont get involved as it is a civil matter.Comment

Is it at a dealership? if it is you should have signed the bottom of the repair order. But if you have not given authority to carry out the repair and can prove you didnt tell them to undo anything they have done. As far as I'm aware, they cannot hold the car in Lou of payment. They car must be returned to you, and then they fight you for the coin.Comment

Repairers lien, yes they can. also charge storage & any other reasonable costs.
But they won't.
Simple discussion, it was not authorised if this is the case & you are out of there with your vehicle.
It should be clear, if this was authorised, it should be written on the job card/r.o who spoke to who what day & time or authorisation.
Who is going to stand up & lie about it? A service advisor? Talk to service & general manager & don't eave until they do the right thing.
If its a genuine mis communication you may have to work something out?Comment
