Sounds like a recipient of some attention?

Not from the victim side, but some I have known achieved notoriety in more than one police district. I guess they are posted on when even their peers can stand them no longer; but they remain at the coalface when they should be buried in admin somewhere. Same personality type is seen in most sections of society, but usually don't have the latitude to get away with the same behavior without getting belted.

In the same vein, I would love to know why its ok for "highway patrol" to engage in acts the rest of us would receive huge fines for.

I see them parked on painted medians in the middle of the road quite often. The other day a revenue raising car was parked in the middle of a multi lane road, in the right turn lane, made from the cut out of the median strip. Not only did traffic have to go around this car to turn right, it also caused traffic to bank up.

Back to the topic of this thread - I love the logic. If you leave your window down, your car may get broken into. So we will relieve you of your hard earned anyway.

I have had a few cars broken into. A brick or a jimmy was the method of choice. I reported it for insurance, but the cops let me know in no uncertain terms that I really was wasting their time. Yep - just doing their job...

          Too true.
There's a cop who loves to sit in a side street off North East Rd at Holden Hill with his radar pointed back up North East Rd. On more than one occasion I've seen others having to go around him when turning out of the side street. It's worse in Winter at 6am when it's dark and he has his headlights turned off.......

MM61, not sure in QLD but in NSW as long as you have either the heater and/or aircon to defog/demist the front window then its not a defect....Must say I always leave all my windows down around 3cm on hot days when parked in the street to let the heat out, use to have the sunroof tilted up when I had the grande to allow excess heat out. if Im in an enclosed carpark eg Westfield then its all 4 up and locked securely .....Cheers Steve

This law is problematic as it effectively places an onus on the vehicle owner to prevent the criminal wrongdoing of a third party. From a conceptual point of view these are utilitarian laws which deny a few their freedoms for the good of the majority. If the state was effective in preventing the criminal from offending in the first place then these laws would not be necessary.

Secondly, its my vehicle and if I want to take the risk of leaving the window open then so be it. If this is truly the direction police will be taking then lets infringe women who wear short skirts and make up after 6pm, because surely they are not helping to prevent sexual assaults by the way they are dressed.

But that would go against principle number 5.

Absolutely not. Demonstrating impartiality is different to knowing when to apply & when to relax the letter of the law.

It's exactly this type misunderstanding that is the problem. And as for punishing the citizen because of what a criminal might do, this seems to further demonstrate why our society is troubled.

Absolutely agree 100 % at 64 I've all ways had respect for the law but not after my little experience with them I now see why the public challenge them, sorry but no one will tell me this is not one of the DUMBEST laws I've ever heard of I mean who's car is it ? if it gets robbed you wont to do it again and how is the window being closed going to stop them breaking in any way, no sorry ex cop but if you cant see why this infuriates people then you too are simply not listening to the public , maybe this is a government qualification of the job, I mean pollies dont listen either do they ? I have to wonder what ever happened to good old common sense, just when was it we lost that precious commodity................?

That is true. But it also can create an air of corruption.

Not if it is exercised honestly, transparently and on the basis of valid and reasonable grounds. Corruption is something that can be mitigated against and overcome. Losing public confidence and legitimacy is much harder to regain once lost.

I'm sure the officer would have learn't from this. Next time he sees a car parked on the wrong side of the road, on a footpath and with a window down he will just hit the person with two big fines and forget about the troublesome little fine for the window, so the next bloke who does something as dumb as this offender will get hit with a big stick instead.
