I really like the idea of the handhelds for the kids to talk in convoy. - great for keeping them entertained and feeling part of the action.

As most of our trips are to a lake down South for a weekend of skiing and wake boarding I carry the in car unit and three cheap handhelds.

The in car is for the convoy down to the lake and acts as the base station. The hand held are passed around for the boat driver to communicate with dry land, and to give to the kids to take when they go of exploring the paddocks around camp.

You may be surprised how much range you ay need for convoy communications, on dusty roads even a small group can be spread out over a few klm's.

This is very true, also the person using the handheld never realises how bad they are as generally they pickup convo ok but its the other people who can't hear the person speaking properly on the handheld thats the issue.

I have both but only because I had a handheld previously, they are great for recoveries when you get out of the car etc but definitely having an in car UHF would be one of my first mods if I bought a new car.

You will wonder how you went without it once you have one.

2 x UHF and one HF as well, so 3 radios in all. Really handy especially when leading convoys to have one on convoy channel and another on ch 40 to follow what's happening there. Ones a 40 and ones an 80, they don't play together so well, so I can choose which one to use depending who I am with. Keep one on convoy channel and one on scan, that can be done with a single unit as well, just easier with 2.............

              Cheers Andrew

pretty much said it all boys, got the roof mount cb, + 2 x handhelds, true about the convoy

(Me and a mate who normally run together have in car 80 ch uhf's)
If someone is travelling with us and dont have a hard wired cb, i chuck em the handheld

they end up in the middle for reasons stated..

But the women spend most of the time yacking whilst the blokes are drivin, lol

for my use I would agree its very handy to have the hand helds in your rig + the base

send some some up the track for a squiz, chuck em the hand held and wait for the advice.. yes handy with the kids too .. Its only when the kids leave em on and flatten the batteries without knowledge.. that sucks

other than that get both... Cheers boys butane
