Has anyone used 1 of these ?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GME-TX310...708f167&_uhb=1

My son has a jeep wrangler and there is not many places to mount a uhf that he does not thinks looks crap.
So this being able to be put away in the glove box after each trip makes sense.
Distance is not much of a problem as we are seldom any further than 1/2 a click away from each other.

Yep, I bought this kit and it works fine, not sure of max distance/range as was always in similar situation.

Mine is now permanently mounted with fixed antenna, having it mounted on the windscreen and wires running everywhere gave me the shits! LOL

Mine is attached to the windscreen in the middle and sits low so it sits on the dash mat and doesn't block any view while driving.. All the wires are hidden under the dash mat and the aerial is on the right: looks tidy enough.

Any idea on how much range you get from yours Sunshine ?

I removed the ash tray in the centre console and mounted mine there, works great, I use a GME aerial and had reasonable results but not found the maximum range yet.

I have just picked up my GXL diesel auto on Friday. In my old car I had a GME UHF and when towing on long trips found it very useful to talk to mainly truckies who were travelling much faster behind me than my towing speed of 95 kmh !
I would like to put in another CB in my Prado but are considering a portable quality handheld instead for reasons of easy of installation and cost.

Has anyone any feedback on how a portable 2W handheld operated inside a car compares to a fully installed 5W with an outside aerial?
              thanks

The portable radio will rarely perform anywhere near a properly installed mobile radio. Portables generally have less power and inferior antenna performance compared to mobiles. Combined, this will result in significantly less range. I work in radio communications and personally i would only choose a portable radio as an addition to a mobile for close in comms like vehicle recoveries.

I have a 5W Oricom in-car and a GME TX670 2W handheld. I haven't compared the distance performance for typical convoy distance spread but I'm pretty certain the 5W will win.

Your usage of the handheld in a convoy will also vary depending if you are in front or at the back. If you are in front, the signal will be attenuated by the cargo barrier and the van you're towing behind. If you're at the back, you have to penetrate through other people's van and cargo barriers. So if you were alone, your transmit signal would reach further towards the front of your vehicle than towards the rear.

If everyone in a convoy had antennas on the roof, then you would all be able to hear each other for much longer distances.

In terms of practical use, you could setup the in-car UHF for the convoy if the convoy is large and you are spread out. Then you would use the handheld on Ch 40 to talk with the truckies as they approach. If it is a small convoy, then you might switch it the other way and use the 5W for Ch 40 to get traffic reports from further ahead.

If you want to conserve battery power on the handheld, then you would use the handheld for the party that you would expect the least conversation.

                    Hi Ian,
Thanks for your reply - will look into a properly installed radio.

My recommendation would be to look at the tx3340 more or less the same unit however with the controls on the hand piece it gives you greater flexibility. Also, the new units that have the push to,talk feature that you mount to the steering shell are pretty cool also.
I have the tx3340 fitted in mine (now replaced by the tx3345) and also carry the 5/1 watt TX6100 (now replaced b the tx6150) and the tx670 1/2 watt, cant fault any of these units....

The CTCSS Feature is handy when in convoy as you can talk with your mates and not be interrupted by others on the same channel. They can still hear you but you don't receive there calls. You can alo monitor two channels at one with another feature that escapes me at the moment.

Yep, that's called the dual watch feature. I'm not entirely clear how I can use it properly as it is said to pause on the channel that is transmitting. It then goes back and forth watching the truckie channel and the convoy channel. It seems that it is easy to inadvertently talk into the wrong channel. You have to keep an eye on the display as to which channel is currently active before you hit the PTT button. Not really convenient while driving.

I've got a TX3100 in the Grande. Its been mounted down the passenger side footwell against the centre console. We've had no worries with it at all and used to get plenty of range when we were living out in Kowanyama. Mated to a GME aerial on the bullbar. I looked into the plug and play version before I purchased the fixed one but was a bit wary of the range on the small antenna.
