  • Uh oh, something's not right..

This afternoon i went to my chiropractor appointment and when i went back out to drive home i started the car as per usual but something was NOT right. I have a 2004 V6 Grande with 187k on the clock. When i started the car i went to move it from P into D but the gear stick wouldn't shift across, i had depressed the brake like usual but it still wouldn't move. I then pushed the shift lock button and it allowed it to change gears.

Then i looked at the instrument cluster and noticed the ABS, ASC TRC and ASC OFF lights lit on the cluster. I turned the car off and restarted it two more times yielding the same results. Anyways i started driving and everything seems to be working as it should, after about 5 minutes of driving the lights all turned off.

I filled the car up and when i hopped back in it started like usual, changed into gear like usual, and there were no extra lights lit on the cluster. When i pulled out of the servo i gave it a little bit to see if the traction control was working, which it was and i tested the ABS on the trip home on a dead end road and all was good there too..

Could anyone shed some light on what this may be? I have to get it in for a service and to replace the front brake rotors and pads again in the next week so i will get my mate to plug it in to see if there are any error codes but in the interim would anyone have any suggestions?

From memory this could be brake light fuse or blown brake lights. Have a look and if that isn't right do a deeper search here because I am sure it has been covered before. Hopefully as simple as that. Give the fuses and bulbs a wriggle.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I find it hard to believe that it can all be connected but it must be. Now that you mention it there has been a couple of times where ive noticed my CRUISE light flash and then ive turned it off..

When i get home i will check this fuse.

Hi JHiace, The problem is with your Brake Light switch behind the brake pedal. I had the exact same symptoms (including the dash lights). I have solved it by removing the Brake Switch and cleaning the contacts and then putting it back in and adjusting it correctly. Problem was ongoing for a few years until I did the actions above and now no longer have any problem

Thanks Jay, I was thinking that it probably isn't the fuse. Considering this is an occasionally happening problem, not constant like it would be if it was the fuse.

Pulled out the brake switch under the brake pedal today, gave it all a clean and made the contacts all new looking again so will see if this fixes the issue.. I think it will as when this was disconnected the three lights came up on the dash and the gear stick wouldn't move.. Fingers crossed
