  • Changing into low and back to high range without crunching transfer case.

Have just bought my 2008 VX auto D4D before xmas and on first trip noise started coming from the transfer case. Tranny shop stripped it and found teeth off in transfer case so complete rebuild needed.. Still waiting for it to come out of tranny shop but what is the correct sequence to select low range (I have been stopping, selecting P then select Low range then back into D and proceed, use reverse method to get back to High, stop, select P then change low to high then d to continue.). In the VX with traction control when do you need to select electric diff lock (ie lock front and rear diff together). I am used to the 80 GXL 5 speed manual and when you select low it automatically selects diff lock and you only need to select lock in high 4.
Can you come to stop, select neutral on auto then low before gears spool up then D to move again?? Would be grateful for any info.

    cheers Rod

    Hi Rod
I have a 150gxl auto and need to be in neutral. The 150 is electricaly activated but the principle should be the same. I have a solenoid, you have your hand.

When you actually think about it, being in P (a gear) is obviously not going to work. Sometimes I forget on my 90 series and wonder why it's so hard and then realise. You need to be in neutral as said above. I guess it's a costly lesson for you?

I have a 2006 GXL D4D Auto. Sequence is - Stop, Select Neutral, Shift H->L, select Drive/Gear (and vice versa going L->H).

It goes in easy in Park it's neutral where I get grating if I'm a bit slow shifting. It appears the gear selector (high low selector) broke a piece off and dropped between the gears causing the failure.

N or P is fine to change to and from low range. There is a card on the sun visor advising how to do it.

You can activate the center diff lock in high or low range in the VX, Grande and other models that comes with an option pack. Just don't drive on hard surfaces with the center diff lock on.

and if you are in a 150 series, select neutral or it will not go into low range and give you a dash alarm until you fix the situation.

You can change while still rolling slowly in neutral whether the centre diff is in or not

Thanks for the replies guys and I know now I wasn't doing anything to cause this.
Got my Prado back today and it had dropped a tooth on the sun gear destroying the three planetary gears as well. Wholesale Automatics think it was a fracture in the gear probably from ages ago. I only had the car a week when it let go so was a bit peeved but all is good now and I know it was not something I had done wrong. Heading up the Murray this week towing the Caravan so should be a good workout for it.

Is a solenoid like a vibrator for men? just asking, over the blisters.
