Beach you mentioned earlier that no cop likes to be told their wrong, I think this would go for anyone, not just cops.

What I love about the media is the use of the word 'alleged'. They need to be coached in the use of this. For example; 'a murder allegedly took place at such and such address'. The murder (someone was killed by someone else) actually took place so it's not alleged, when someone is charged and before they are convicted it is then that they allegedly murdered that person. I couldn't agree more with everyone, having had a lot to do with the media previously I do know that they generally live for sensationalism, anything that they perceive the public would like to hear, they will grab it and run, hence 4wd when AWD would be more appropriate, bikie when it should be motorcyclist, etc.

As a former 4wd instructor with the Police, our definition of 4wd for permits was anything fitted with a transfer case, so for a long time Foresters were included but X-Trails and Rav4s weren't.
I have always thought of firearms as weapons because that is their sole purpose. What else were they invented for and what else do we do with them?

Sure, a lot of people don't like to be told their wrong. Some of us accept this and make a correction or take it onboard. However cops tend to respond differently, often ending the "discussion" with words to the effect of "If you want to argue, I will find something else to fine you for". What was that about the community supporting police?

The word "alleged" is over used in the media to stop any legal action. Everything is alleged until proven. Even after someone is charged, its still an allegation until theres a conviction. Blame the legal departments.

When it comes to media sensationalism, keep in mind that this sort of thing only exists because there is an audience for it. No audience, no tv or radio show, paper, magazine, etc. I could give lots of examples, but I will offer an easy one. Who listens to, watches or even likes Kyle Sandilands?

Me neither. However his rating tell a different story. Go figure.

What really pisses me off is when the mainstream news media , ie the morning shows continually show crap from YouTube that would go nowhere other than the brain dead idiots that want to see that crap , and bring it to the news and publicise it . If they stop giving these morons oxygen then no one will see it or copy it . Imagine if they stopped showing some moron showing his kids how to do burnouts , or some blonde bimbo yelling at the paparazzi to stop filming me or if they stopped promoting their bullshit " reality " tv .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

A hunting or target rifle could be used as a weapon to cause harm to/murder another human, as can a hammer, steak knife or piece of wood. Does that mean they are classed as weapons once they have been used in this way? No; a hammer is still a hammer, a steak knife it still a steak knife, a firearm is still a firearm.

I can totally see why people see them in this way, but in my, and many other shooters view it is wrong to class all firearms as weapons. You certainly don't see it being used in much Australian hunting/target shooting literature.

At the most recent gun show me and a few friends met up and went to. One stall had a sign saying 'Do Not handle weapons ...' one of my group specifically pointed it out because it was very strange to see.

Maybe I am wrong, but I am not alone in the shooting community thinking this way.

A lot of firearms are solely designed to shoot holes in paper targets, sometimes at huge distances.

Other things we do with them... Control introduced pests ie rabbits, cats, goats, pigs, dogs, deer. Provide meat for our families with proper free range venison from deer. I personally don't, but others consume rabbit, goat and pig meat harvested from feral animals. We export a lot of feral pig meat to europe.

Anything (firearm, brick, glass bottle, ball point pen, socket wrench) can be a weapon if used as such (to cause harm). In the mean time, they are simply objects known by their English name, as Ben has described. Otherwise I could be in trouble for the pen on my desk - or even the keyboard!

If firearms were all weapons, then so are all knives - including the ones in you're mothers kitchen and your child's art/craft/hobby tools box.

Ummmm....at the risk of pointing out the blatantly obvious and the flaw in your logic - as soon as you say "hunting" or pest control..... thats killing, which requires a weapon. In this case a bang stick or bullet chucker. Were they invented for any other purpose? They may be used for putting holes in paper at distance, but that does not negate their primary, sole or intended purpose, design function, etc, etc. Practice on the range is often a precursor for the intended purpose of killing or disabling at a distance. Firearms were invented and intended as weapons. Thats it. End of story.

All along I had said weapons were designed for killing HUMANS, not animals.

I'm not going to bother going into detail about different types of firearms and their uses because you clearly have no grasp whatsoever on the subject matter.

I was brought up not to argue with certain types of people so im leaving the discussion.

                  I thought as much.

Clearly you're wrong. You know it. But you can't admit it.

                  Carry on.
