  • Perth to Melbourne Vehicle transport ?

I'm just starting to plan a trip to Tasmania this Dec. / Jan.
I am hoping to ship the Prado from Perth to Melbourne. Then fly to Melbourne and take to ferry to Tasmania.
Does anyone know of / have experience with freight companies that would ship a loaded (including roof rack) Prado from Perth to Melbourne and return?

It sounds like an expensive exercise, I'd look it to hiring one when I got there unless I was planning to drive home.

      Hey Leachy,

      Have a look here: http://www.ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=124441

Some good info in here for vehicle transport..... I haven't personally shipped a vehicle off, but quite a few of my friends have and all have had good experiences. Prices have varied from $900 to $3000 depending on location.

        Leachy,

I need to ask. Why aren't you considering driving across? I have always really enjoyed crossing the Nullabor with family. I'm now based in Tassie after 25 years in the West. Last drove last X'mas with camper trailer in tow. Always a great partof the holiday.
If time is an issue, I understand.

The drive across is one of the fun things. BUt there should be plenty of backloading companies from Perth that can help out.

          Also dont forget the train.

We have already done the drive across the nullabor and whilst we would be happy to do it again we would rather spend the extra 5-6 days exploring Tasmaina. We went to Tasmania 2 years ago and hired a 4WD. We decided then if we were to do it again it would be in our own 4WD with our own camping gear. It's much more comfortable in a well prepared vehicle with which your familiar. Thus far all the companies I have contacted will only transport an empty car, but we would want to pack it with all our camping gear.

              Hi Leachy,
Have you considered asking a trusted family member or friend to drive it to Melbourne for you, and fly them back, then repeat when done. The only hassle would be your car arrives home a couple of days after you but it would cost less, so you could hire a car when you get home? It would work out that way getting it freighted anyway.
              Just a thought.
              cheers

Have you checked out putting it on the Indian-Pacific to Adelaide then drive from there to Melbourne? It does not take that long to drive to Melbourne from Adelaide.

Leachy, unfortunately you'll find that just about all car transport companies will not allow you to transport your car with personal belongings. We went through the same thing when moving to Cairns form Melbourne. We ended up paying someone to drive the car up and fly back, worked out much cheaper too.

Understand your predicament, but financially I would think it would be better to hire a fully equipped vehicle of your choice once in the breakaway state  Also suggest a direct flight will give you more time to explore.

                    Cheers,

Another option is to approach the trucking companies (not car transporters) And ask if they have a semi they can backload you on going East.

I have done this before and on one occasion it cost me $150 Alice springs to ADL!!!

We freighted one of our work 4x4's with tools and personal stuff, the transporters wont do it, but the freighties will.
Mining companies do this all the time too.

                          Ha.

we used to call it the South island.

Getting someone to drive it sounds pretty good.

As for the train. Have heard that it is re-dick-u-less-lee expensive.
But if Im wrong about that I would like to know.

                          Tassy in christmas time. Beautiful.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                            Leachy,

The transport companies don't let you have anything in the car except the log books I had this problem in Darwin and was told that the reason is the vehicles are not locked while on the trucks something to do with there insurance and when they stop it towns overnight the vehicles get ransacked.
They also require you to thoroughly clean the vehicle, no mud, sand or anything inside and out, got to do with going over and coming in the boarder.
I used Shaws Transport from Darwin cost $1800.00 to Perth bit steep but had all my tools etc in and loaded up with all sorts. If you go with a freight company ask how it will be loaded as some use a forklift Shaws had a drive on loading dock same level as the truck so no fork which when used can do alsorts of damage.

                            Hope this sort of helps
                            Steve

Hey, we shipped 2 cars back from Perth to Hobart in August last year. Cost was around $1000 each. We used Allied Pickfords.
You are not allowed to have anything in the vehicle when you ship it. We tried and got knocked back!
