  • 150 Diesel Fuel economy on Melbourne to Gosford run

    Hi all,

I drive up to Gosford area from Melbourne once or twice a year. Last time I noticed that the fuel economy reading was higher going to Gosford than coming back. This time I decided to check it out. On leaving Melbourne I filled it up with Caltex Vortex, the run up was fine, cruise control set at 112, temp mostly around 32 with A/C on all the way. The reading on the trip computer was 11.5, slowly dropping to 11.2 by the time I got to about the Liverpool area when I hit traffic and turned the cruise control off.

On the way back I filled it again with Caltex Vortex and headed home, temp started at about 27, rising to 31, cruise control at same setting and A/C on. The trip computer reading was a consistent 9.5.

I was on the Hume both directions, the car was about 20-30kgs lighter on the way back, but I doubt if it would make that much of a difference to the economy.

I did not double check manually, I just relied on the trip computer. Any ideas why the difference? I don't really need to know for any particular reason, just curious.

gravity! which way is up and which way is down, i don't live near ocean, but melbourne i beleive sits next to the ocean and therefore ocean level and you must have climbed up the first trip, return should be better because technically, you are going downhill...
correct me if i am wrong
