The two primary reasons I chose the D4D over the V6 were:
Fuel Range and Resale value.
While both engines have an advantage over the other in certain 4WD situations the difference just isn't that great. I'm yet to find a sand dune that a V6 can climb that I can't and I'm yet to find a downhill decent that I would go down in the diesel and not in a petrol.
Both engines are capable of towing up to the Prado's legal weight limit. The V6 will have more in reserve for overtaking etc. but the D4D will do it more efficiently. But they will both get the job done.
As for a comparison of running costs there are so many variables that are constantly changing any figures are little more than a guess. In the comparisons that I have seen the difference in running costs is insignificant compared to depreciation of a $50K-$70K vehicle.
Bottom line is you pretty much can't go wrong with either the V6 or D4D. The best one is want meets your individual needs / wants.
