The two primary reasons I chose the D4D over the V6 were:

    Fuel Range and Resale value.

While both engines have an advantage over the other in certain 4WD situations the difference just isn't that great. I'm yet to find a sand dune that a V6 can climb that I can't and I'm yet to find a downhill decent that I would go down in the diesel and not in a petrol.
Both engines are capable of towing up to the Prado's legal weight limit. The V6 will have more in reserve for overtaking etc. but the D4D will do it more efficiently. But they will both get the job done.
As for a comparison of running costs there are so many variables that are constantly changing any figures are little more than a guess. In the comparisons that I have seen the difference in running costs is insignificant compared to depreciation of a $50K-$70K vehicle.

Bottom line is you pretty much can't go wrong with either the V6 or D4D. The best one is want meets your individual needs / wants.

I'd have to agree with leachy. My decision to go D4D was also based on range and resale value.

I went from a tuned 6L SS to the D4D without too much heart ache, although you do miss that overtaking grunt where you blink and you're already passed.

To be honest I also drove both and the petrol is definately smoother to drive around the city and is quicker but not by much. You learn how to drive the diesel to utilize it's awesome torque (manual that is). For me I liked the idea of driving a diesel and for some reason made it feel more like a 4x4... Don't ask me why?

At the end of the day you need to ask yourself what will you be doing most in it? My rationale would be: If you're doing heavy towing/4 wheel driving and after good fuel consumption, go the diesel. If you're after a city cruiser and not too concerned about fuel consumption, go the petrol.

Either way both engines work great in the Prado.

      Good luck!
