  • Toyota Service Advantage shortfalls

I have recently had my on schedule 40k service as part of the service advantage program ($210 capped price servicing). About 2000 km later my fuel system light came on indicating I was to take the vehicle back to the dealer. I took it back to the dealer who replaced my main fuel filter and charged me $170 parts & labour.

My vehicle is still under warranty and has been serviced only at Toyota, during my last 40k major service my sub tank filter was replaced. Yet on this occasion the service centre argued that the main filter is a consumable that is not covered by either the service or warranty. The filter is replaced as required and therefore is not replaced during the scheduled services.

I find this quite problematic as the whole point of me buying a new vehicle is that I can predict my running costs with relative certainty and avoid surprises.

Can anyone explain why a fuel filter which was "full of crap" not picked up at my last service? And why my sub tank filter was replaced but the main filter didn't even get inspected? I'm now considering taking legal action against Toyota for misrepresentation of their servicing scheme.

The filter between the tanks is the one scheduled for change every 20k, the under bonnet filter has no recommended service interval, only to change it when the light comes on. I don't think that is a great system, but it is the way Toyota intended it to be. So from that point of view I think you dealer hasn't done anything wrong at all, although $170 to change a fuel filter seems a bit over the top to me, I guess they charged a minimum 1 hour Labour for a 5 minute job?

Legal action for a $170 job Best of luck with that course.

    Cheers Andrew

Mate of mine had fuel issues on a recent trip which turned out to be the filter. Just replace it regularly, don't know why Toyota specify as needed.
