  • Where to buy sand flag to suit new simpson regulations

    Hi Guys,

I'm struggling on this one and running out of time. As most of you are aware the new regulations came in for sand flags in the simpson, I saw it in another thread here too. The closest I can find in a kit that you can break down to 3 pieces is this:

Click Here. - however the flag is only 300 x 260mm (30mm short of requirements).

    New regulations:
As of March 16 2014 sand flags are a requirement to drive in the Simpson Desert. Sand flags must be 300x290mm in size, made of fluorescent materials, and the flag must be 3.5m off the ground.

Anyone else had any luck? I'd prefer not to make my own, i'm keen on a quality flag and pole that will last me a while and break down to a few pieces. I'm sure 30mm doesn't really matter, but i'm trying to do the right thing

    Matt

For everyones info - Clarification from 4x4 equip:

        Hi Matt,

Yes, we are now aware (this week) of the new regulations. Unfortunately, no consultation was done with manufactures, hence most, if not all retail flags on the market will not conform as we have been caught flat footed.

Our flag is 270 x 300 which exceeds the mining spec for which it was designed, however someone came up with 290 x 300 for crossing the Simpson.

I spoke with authorities in SA on Tuesday to get clarification, their response was that no one would be at the start of the crossing with a tape measure and ours would be Ok, also there would be some leniency for the first 12 months as most tourist will be unaware of the changes when they arrive to start the crossing.

Unfortunately, this regulation just effects the Simpson, but I would say that most states will follow. We will be implementing a running change to increase ours to 320 x 320, in the mean time we will be running out our existing stock.

I hope this answers your question. If you wish to purchase the 3.2m a flat delivery cost of $25 applies. We manually add this charge to your order when we receive it.

        Regards,
        Ian

I had one of those poles for the Googs track trip I did in 2012. It lasted about 50km before it started constantly falling down. The cam locks were faulty. Also, the sales-person sold me the incorrect mounting bracket. It had cracked and, combined with the pathetic velcro strap, it moved around a fair bit taking paint off the bull-bar. I now run a mining spec flexible whip attached to a Rhino accessory bracket which is located under the frame on my tracklander roofrack.

I have an old 27 MHz antenna which is about 1.2 m long. This is mounted to a "z" bracket on the roof basket. Easy to put on and off and has never failed on trips crossing the CSR and Simpson. Tape on a flag to suit. Which Wally came up with the specs. which are different to the mining flags and why?

Thanks for that Dave. I decided against the 4x4 equip ones once i found out how the brackets worked, starts to get too expensive too.

                Matt,

If you get stuck I've got a 1-piece 2.0 metre long sand-flag pole in Bathurst you could use, once mounted on top of the bullbar (just uses a UHF aerial spring) it would be about 3.5m high. The flag would be a bit smaller than required but it's unlikely anyone would measure it. The flag and pole has done the Simpson and other trips without issue.

Let me know if you will need it or want to take a look.

Thanks a lot Jeff, nice to see another local! I'm in Sydney this weekend and ARB Penrith apparently have the blackwidow one in stock for a reasonable price so I might go and check it out. Thanks a lot for the offer mate!

I have a 4x4equip pole/flag and bullbar side wing mount. Never had a problem with it.
