  • Tekonsha Primus IQ brake controller problem

    Hi all

I have the above controller fitted to my 150V6 Prado which has been working fine for the last 6mths/10k klm's.
Approx a week ago whilst driving the controller went from working fine to showing N.C. whilst the trailer was still connected. It then found the trailer again and lost connection and carried on like this until we stopped and now the controller always shows NC, trailer connected or not.

The weird thing is that when I now start the car the controller shows a trailer connection for about 10sec before reverting back to NC.

I've googled brake controller issues and there are a number of troubleshooting papers on the NC however I can't see any mention of the phantom reading of a trailer connected.

I did have the trailer lights replaced to SCA LED's about 10 days before this started happening, and I have replaced the trailer 7 pin plug in trying to resolve the issue.

Has anyone either had or heard about the same issue.

    Thanks

    Trev

I'd suggest you have a poor earth between the trailer and the car, or at the earth the brake controller is picking up, possibly at the trailer plug or where ever the earth wire goes.

These sort of problems are always a p.i.t.a.

Can you try another trailer to eliminate either vehicle or trailer?

Connect a 12 volt relay, like a horn or driving lights relay, to the trailer brake pin of your 7 pin socket. Connect one side to the pin and the other to the socket's ground pin. This emulates the units in the trailer's brakes. See if the system works or not. If it works, problem is from the socket towards the trailer somewhere. Maybe earthing as suggested or trailer wiring.

If system not working, then place the relay at the brake controller itself and try again. If ok, then vehicle wiring suspect. If not ok, then controller suspect.

        Cheers
        Geoff
