I have a 2001 prado, its had a slight oil leak for a few weeks then on Tuesday night after I got out of the car I noticed a huge puddle and trail of oil id dropped. the mechanic came to it today and changed the front oil seal then the oil pressure switch. put the car back together started it up and it still does it. he now tells me must be something in the sump eg. cracked oil pump bracket. and as the sump wont come off on 'these cars' he will have to take the whole engine out, to ''get in there and see whats going on'' quoting around $1500-$2000 but if ''something is cracked'' it will cost a lot more. being female and having no real idea about cars, I am asking for opinions does this sound right??? thankyou

Hi nat3122002, I think you better to ring around to find another reputable mechanic, as big leaking normally should be easier to locate and identify, without knowing where the oil came from, replace parts just to test luck is not professional enough. To me all his words sounds like trying to rip off. That's my think, all the best.

The engine does not need to come out to find where the oil is leaking from it.
They need to remove the sump guards, pressure clean it and get it up on a hoist while its running and use a torch to find where it is coming from. It could be as simple as the oil filter coming loose, a seal leaking or gaskets on the valve covers.
This is mechanics 101. Not hard. Take it somewhere else. Expect to pay the hourly rate for them to work out what is going on.2009 120 V6 Auto. 265/70/17 Goodyear Silent Armours. Bilsteins and Kings Springs.

Nat whats your location ?? Also agree 100% with all above. Give that mechanic the boot and find some one else. He's trying to screw you over or he has absolutely any idea of whats he's doing... As bushbasher has said, you need to put in your location so some one on here can send you to a reputable mechanic....Cheers SteveFace lift 150 Prado V6 auto. No mods yet
