  • Checking water depth on puddles/holes

Is there some kind of trick/rule to how to gauge the water depth in a hole/puddle. Not talking about creek/river crossing or even large bodies of water, just general pools of water that are road width and 1-2 car lengths long you might find along a track in winter. Surely people dont check each one however how do you deal with the risk that one might just swallow the car?

Went for a drive in dwellingup last weekend and there were small-large pools of water all over the track, some obviously only inches deep and others looked shallow enough however I could never tell for sure. Ended up walking the edges of a lot of them checking the depth however felt a bit ridiculous and made forward progress pretty slow.

any tips ? couple of others past us and were just driving straight through however I was having nightmares I would end up nose first into a 2m hole.

If in doubt check it out, there is no magic formula. Its not just the depth either but what the bottom of the hole is like, sloppy mud or rock hard.

This was me only a week or so ago, I was on my own, not much to winch off and on a remote track unlikely to see any traffic, better safe than sorry.

Send the wife. If she doesn't drown or get taken by a croc then you were meant to be together forever.

If I send the wife I need to give her a snorkel. Being so short the car is capable of doing depths she cant see over.......

Never take the depth of even a small puddle for granted. The orginal video was quite funny but seems its now private

Even water that is planned can cause you to float away, not just getting stick or drowned. Also reminder that snorkels are for dust, not water. Most cars will float away before the air intake goes under.

Sorry but that is wrong, snorkels while helpful for dust are most definitely for water! Here is three examples of water above the intake point and I didn't float anywhere.

My wife made a mistake one day and got out of the car whilst I traversed a big waterhole up towards Mitchell Plateau. I let her stew for a while contemplating crocs and other nasties before I went back and retrieved her. She also watched her brother suddenly go from thigh-deep to neck-deep up on the Tele Track. Now she refuses to get out.
