  • Measuring height

What's the best way to measure the exact height of the vehicle ?? I'm going to the city on Friday night with a Prado full of people and need to know the EXACT height of my Prado. I would like to measure it as is with virtually no fuel in tanks. I was going to pull my roller door down into roof then measure distance from ground to roller door but I have a sloping driveway so would be inaccurate.... Cheers Steve

Park it on level ground, place a long piece of timber (or anything light and straight) across it in the highest point, level timber and measure from ground up.

Alternately find a flat piece of ground with something above, say carport roof. Measure from highest point on Prado to the roof, then shift Prado and measure from ground to same point, subtract first measurement from second and that's your height.

    probably lots of other ways.

    Cheers Andrew

I do mine the first method as AJ said. but once you have lots of people in the Prado, the height will drop.

I measured mine from the carport but be careful because ramps in and out may change the effective height. I wedged my 90 once even though I should have had clearance. Extra layer of Tarmac on the car park floor and the (down) ramp in took away the 50mm I should gave had. Anyway apart from paint off the roof rack no problems. A few for the people queued up behind me didn't know you could use R up a curved ramp! Not sure I have ever seen so many cars weave around and cover many extra metres just to get out of my way.

Dooh I'm a dickhead, didn't even think of measuring from my garage roof to top of car etc as you mentioned AJ. My garage floor is pretty dead level so yes that should give me a pretty accurate height. MJ I would have thought they take that into consideration when working out there height. I know Westfield at blacktown I nearly got cought as it goes from 2.1 for memory where you drive in then half way through drops to 1.9 and you have to go that way to get out, so to me they should have 1.9 at the main gate. I use to clear it but haven't been in there since the lift went in the Prado .... Cheers guys will measure this arvo.... Steve

Have been caught once at the Hurstville Westfields shopping centre. I can drive along the bottom 2 levels, but once when there was no parking, I drove up 2 levels until I saw the sign '1.9 metres'

I was f###ed then, a long line of cars behind, no turning back.

I could hear the roof section where the concrete roof slabs are joined (lower than the rest of the roof section) scraping across the roof racks attached to the roof rails, but had to keep going. When I looked later, pieces of metal were scraped from the metal roof racks.

If things comes to shove, let the air out of the tyres. Better than scraping metal.

How bloody stupid is that.. They should have just made it 1.9 all round. I would have stopped there and called centre management and said get your arse up here and give me a guide back down in reverse OR your supplying me new roof racks. Different if there was a sign when you are on the ground floor saying bottom 2 levels are 2 and 3rd level up is 1.9 or what ever then if you decide to go up then your problem but a bit too late as you said when your committed your self and can't turn back. Bloody dickheads........ Cheers Steve

There's a public car-park in Newcastle with a ramp down from the road-way to the underground parking lot. I managed to get the army-issue Hi-Ace into it unfortunately the van got stuck on the way out. We had to almost let all the air out of the tyres to get out. The transport fellas never checked the roof when I handed it back prior to returning to the west coast - suckers.

Here is some interesting feedback from the ACT.

Someone asked our Cheif Minister on her weekly ABC radio talkback session about carpark entry heights. The Westfield in the CBD had installed 1.95m entry hanging bars and warnings. This reply was submitted:

                      http://timetotalk.act.gov.au/storage...une%202012.pdf

A week or so ago I roughly measured 3 of the entries and the bars are actually at 2.1m despite 1.95m the signage - probably raised after this session. The interesting bit in the reply is about the carpark ceiling height standard being 2.1m (at least in the ACT)

Wonder if this includes the sprinkler heads etc I would think so. It would have to be from the lowest thing hanging down.... Cheers Steve

It was just this one f***ing section that was low, everywhere else I was just under, and that was the only section that was '1.9 metres', just as you start driving into it. The entry points were '2 metres' all round the other ramps.

I Just measured mine as suggested by AJ, Works out to be 1.9m give or take a cm or two without any roof racks but with my TJM 2inch lift and running standard size tyres. The car park Im going into will be 2M so I will be ok, plus this is with only 1/2 a tank of fuel in one tank the other empty and will have 5 adults in the car so no problems but will certainly keeping my eye out for any lower signs about....... Cheers Steve
