  • Two aerials

I've seen a few vehicles that have what looks like two UHF aerials mounted on the bull bar.

(I have no idea who the bloke is!)

I'm under the broad assumption that one is UHF and the other for telecom (mobile, etc.).

    Is that the case?

      Ahh...OK...

Just was reading about running two UHF aerials and they need to be x distance apart, etc....

I have 2 UHF aerials, but I have 2 UHF's which is probably unusual. I suspect most 2 aerial setups are UHF and phone though.

You can also buy am/fm aerials to mount to your bullbar. Increase your reception in remote areas. Could account for some 2 aerial set ups you see as well. Since I changed head units my reception is crap so I'm investing in one of these shortly

People also run hf and vhf radios in there 4wds which could account for a few more.

Most HF aerials have a much larger base (not all) like mine.

So they are usually easy to spot.

One member here has 6 radios in his Prado, so aerials everywhere on that rig

            Cheers Andrew

6 radios, that's awesome, and here I was thinking I was strange for wantin 2 put a vhf in as well. At least with all those aerials he'll always have a spare fishin rod.

HF certainly has its place, especially when remote. A UHF is limited pretty much to line of sight where as a HF you can make contact over thousands of kilometers. HF has a network backing it up as well, volunteers all over the country at base stations helping out people with all sorts of things.

It's also a useful source of info just listening of an evening and also can be quite entertaining from time to time.

Yep I have two as well, both on the left. One is for the UHF and the other for the mobile. My old rig had a third one as well for the FM radio but even with the external aerial it didn't get reception so I haven't bothered with that one on the prado.
Some of the travellers we see coming through here have cars that look like echidnas they have that many antennas, I have no idea what they would all be for!
