  • The Cape - Fishing opportunities along the way

I am considering doing the cape next year. The ultimate path will involve most water crossings the OTT, and other expected routes of someone that could be classified as "driving it like he stole it." I was wondering if there are opportunities to wet a line that don't take one off the general line? I would be taking a small flick with plastics and smaller lures so as to avoid stinky bait smells wafting through my classy blue vein cheese and Parmesan compote.

Take a small 3-5kg rod with a nice little overhead. Load it with 20lb or 30lb braid & a 50lb flouro leader. Learn to cast it. Practice casting it. Get good at casting it. Practice casting it more. Get a few proven lures (Gold Bomber, Reidy's, Classics, etc) in an assortment of colours/sizes. Suspending & floating are probably going to suit better. Some medium sized poppers can be good fun too.

I'd also be looking at a soft plastic rod in a similar rating and line. Look at plastics like the Squidgy Fish around 100mm. The white colour with red throat is a stand out colour up north. That's the main one I used up in Townsville, and they slayed the fish.

Listen to this guy. I bought myself a nice, modest overhead combo a few months back.

Birdnested it like a bastard within 10 minutes, been sitting in the corner ever since. Been meaning to test my patience once again...

If you can give me a quick run down of your itinerary ill be able to give you a list of spots to go. Im no fisherman - havent been for years but I have travelled with mates that are mad keen (i always take my rods but they mostly stay in the car ). There are HEAPS of good spots to fish up the Cape. Just be mindful of the Snappy Handbags - id hate to hear of another statistic

I don't know where which route I'm taking yet. It will depend on leave, weather, whether (I have to hide the Missus's carcass after she accidentally dies falling on a tent peg because she wont shut up), whether she get accidentally taken during a water crossing, what depth said water crossing are, etc etc etc....

so many accidents, so little time to plan.....

Unless you are an avid fisherman or can hire a charter out of Weipa or Bamaga , don't bother . I did the cape like a n.... err bla.. Person in a stolen prado and I was an avid fisherman carrying 5 rods and reels . I didn't take them out of the rod tube , which is another useless piece that you will have to add to the car . I only found 2 spots that I would have bothered and one had bubbles coming up from water next to where I would have been standing , and it wasn't Micheal Jackson,s chimp . Although the very tip of the cape looked fishy but I was too lazy to walk back to the car and get my gear and carry it back again . They definitely need a road for that last little 20 min walk to the tip .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !
