Brissy to Alice Springs 2015 - Newbies need your advice!

Hi All,

Just wanted to pick your "PP" brains for any info or advice you all may have in relation to a trip we are planning to do next year (2015) on June July holidays from Brissy to Alice Springs / Uluru etc.

There are currently 2 of us planning the trip, both have new 2014 GXL 4D4 150's (Auto).

Both of us have reasonable prior 4WD experience, having lived / worked in and around Central and North West Queensland for a few years, but nothing too extreme (Mt Isa to Birdsville, Karumba etc), mostly bulldust!!!

Any advice you may have on;
- Routes, must see destinations, fun / interesting people and or places to meet or see on the way.
- What to take / minimum rig set-ups etc. (At the moment, both Prado's are very much a work in progress.)
- Any ideas or thoughts about camping, equipment / set-up or accomodation greatly accepted!

I'm the other person planning to head out with Matt. We are both locked into going in school holidays and realise that June July is the best time to travel due to heat and rain over summer, which are when kids are on longest holidays.

That leaves us with a 2 week period to get out and back. At this stage we are looking at heading out and seeing as much as we can before heading for home giving us about 7 days around Alice etc. I'm keen to do the Merinee Loop (did it in 1991 in a Toyota Coaster) taking in Kings Canyon but this time also do parts of the Finke Gorge National Park, Boggy Hole etc before heading to Uluru.

As Matt said, our cars are bog standard. With $ being a premium, is there anything in the way of vehicle mods / equipment that are a MUST given the type of terrain we plan to cover?

Mods, could we please move this to Trip Planning and Reports. I have also changed my settings for better searching etc and found some threads that will assist in our planning and prevent rehashing old topics.

If you don't have it already look into getting wiki camps for android or iTunes great for planning stop overs and camping places that might not be obvious.

No. Matt Hanna's. We are both in Brisbane. Both have 2 kids the same ages who get along so will be a great trip.
