  • Ford Territory

    Hey guys.

As my Prado (D4D GXL 6sp) is going to be ordered by the lease company shortly, I have been talking to a few people regarding their decision to buy a Ford Territory instead of a Prado.

The only reason they have come up with is the cargo area. Now both people I have spoken to have two kids. One with 2-3 year old twin boys, and one with a boy and a girl, 6 & 3.

Currently my wife and I are going through IVF and if all works out we should end up with twins, which means ... you guessed it ... twin pram/stroller. I am aware that the rear row of seats can be removed, which will be my first DIY mod!

I have had a good look at the cargo area of both vehicles, and after removing the rear seats, the Prado has more usable space. Maybe my perception of space, but I've been told I will struggle to get a double pram into the Prado, I'd hate to be jamming it into a Territory...

I know the "other advantages" of buying a Prado over a Territory, so I am interested to hear about cargo area and prams/kid stuff!

PS I'm not changing my order to a Territory!

Having had to hire territories numerous times on interstate work trips I can say:

You may as well buy a Lemon on wheels. They are the most underpowered, crap handling thing I have ever driven!
I dont think you could even compare the 2 in a side by side comparison.

Though one thing is they will be super cheap as Ford is in serious trouble with car sales so need to move them. Toyota has given them a massive flogging at the sales yards!

If you get one, the only decently powered one is the Turbo model.

I have fitted a double pram (Valco) and a single (Mclaren) into the Prado at the same time. I couldnt get the Valco into a Friends terror-tory when we went out in it one day.

Hi Hubble - I guess its a matter of priortising your needs. I bought a D4D VX last December after much research and I love it. I could have opted for a soft roader and got a lot more for my money but wanted the extra flexibility the low range in the Prado offered. I was also concerned about resale and decided that the Prado was best in its class. My mate has a Territory and despite Team Piggy's view I was pretty impressed with its build quality and the inclusions (little stuff like hooks in back for hanging stuff and cargo blinds - stuff you just do without in the Prado - but are just handy and wouldnt cost Toyota much to fit). We've been away on a couple of trips together and I was suprised at the capability of the Territory over some broken terrain that I was sure would stop it. I'm pretty sure if push came to shove he'd leave me for dead in a drag race so I'm not sure about the turbo recommendation given that they apparently drink like a fish. He also paid a lot less for his Territory than I did for the Prado, but expect he'll get much less when it comes to time to turn it over - so like I said really a matter of deciding what you really want the vehicle for.

I don't know much about the Territories room, But I have 3 kids (15,12,and 9 years old) and have no trouble fitting in crap they need and them. I've even managed to throw my mountain bike in the back and it doesn't fold like a pram.
My Prado is primarily a work horse, so I carry an industrial vac' mop and bucket, window washing gear, ladder, storage boxes, backpack and lots of other crap in the back all the time no probs. I've also had my mother inlaws Fisherpaykel washing machine in the back.

I reckon another of my mates was the best terror-story to come out of the factory!

They didnt seal the base of the windscreen properlyand at 3 days old he parked it outside , IN the rain!!!!!!!!
Had a nice swimming pool inside by the morning.

Ford refused to warranty it, and he ended up parking it across their dealership driveway for 2 days locked !!
They finally removed the carpets and dried them, they totally refused to replace them...... :?:

He sold the car at a massive loss as it never seemed to lose that wet dog smell.... And some of you guys complain about Toyota's warranty????

Thanks for the replies guys. Before creating this thread, I had made up my mind to get a Prado.

I have compared lease quotes with my brother in law (his employer uses same lease company), and the monthly cost is not much different between a TX non turbo Territory and a D4D GXL. I put the extra cost of the Territory down to its pure thirst. Ford have never really been able to make the 4.0L inline 6 economical.

I have actually only driven on Territory and was undecided if I liked it or not. I have never like the "steering feel" of Fords, and it felt like a Falcon wagon with a lift kit!!!

Thanks Piggy for posting about prams, this is the verification I needed.

The only thing the Territory has over the Prado IMHO is I wouldn't need to wait for a Territory, oh well bring on the Prado!!!!

Terrortory is a car. Prado is a 4wd 8) Both designed for very different markets I would have thought.

I wouldnt dream of taking a Terror accross the Simo......

I have both these cars at the moment .my own Prado GXL 4D4 for personal use and a territory (TS Seven Seater) company day vehicle

If I were choosing between the two it would be the Prado,
                  Prado Advantages
                  Max off road work
                  Reliability,
                  Better Resale
                  Has a manual option
                  180litre tank
                  Much better fuel economy

                  Territory advantages
                  Still thinking……………..
                  :!: :!: :!: :!:
Buy a kluger if you are after a softroader

                  cheers

I've only been in one (a Territory that is) a couple of times and I was amazed at the level of road noise and rear suspension thump. When going over speed humps I thought the rear end was going to fall off. One thing I did notice they had improved was the noise of the Ford 6cyl donk, doesn't sound as near as ugly as they do in a Falcon. Most people who get a ride in my Prado (petrol) comment at how quiet it is and how smooth the ride is. They usually say they thought it would ride like a truck. Another car that amazes me for lack of refinement is a Tribute.

I used to have a Territory, I thought it was quite comfortable as a car, towing wasn't too bad and drove ok but quality was a major issue. I bought the car almost new (15,000 km on it) and had nothing but trouble, it went to the local Ford dealer about once a month for warranty work, they never disputed the warranty claims but it was just a hassle taking it back and being without a car. Most of the problems were just fittings etc falling off and it wasn't because of poor treatment, mine never even went on a gravel road.
As far as room for a pram, I find the Prado much better, I have 4 kids and find the biggest advantage is being able to fold down only one back seat (the Territory you can only have both of the third row of seats up or none). I could fit a pram behind the third row in the Territory with a bit of a squeeze but it's much easier in the Prado to just have the one seat down and you can put a pram next to the seat, I haven't tried to put in a double pram though.

A little bit of a late reply and slightly off topic, but my uncle has owned used Fords all his life since his first car back in the 70's which was an XC. He then traded in and bought an XF, EB, EF, AU and now a Territory which he's had for approx 4 years... And you know what?? Every single one was a lemon except for XB. He's only just learned his lesson over the last 12 months and has decided he's going to buy a 120 series Prado soon. All his Fords cost him a fortune while he owned them with continuous mechanical failures. The same re-ocurring problems in a few models, but being a Ford man, he was always blind to it. His 3 kids bought Mazda 3's and the other bought a Commodore. So the good ol' Ford tradition died in that family due to previous experiences. His 2 sons would never touch a Falcon. A company I used to work for used BA Falcon's for their rep cars for a few years back and had nothing but problems with them. Their were issues such as diffs breaking, faulty transmissions, cruise control getting stuck on, head gasket failures, leaking water pumps and front rotor issues. They got rid of them eventually and leased better cars. I just hope the federal government don't give Ford another bail-out package to keep them afloat because they can't sell enough units of a crap product that everybody's wised up to.
