  • 4WD survey

    Hi all

Have read of this article that was on a news website today.

AUSTRALIANS are turning against 4WD vehicles because they are too big for city roads and "socially unacceptable" for their enviromental cost, a survey shows.

The survey of 2380 Australian drivers by motor insurers AAMI also revealed that 75 per cent of respondents thought the instalment of rear-cameras should be compulsory for all 4WDs.

The cameras - which provide drivers with another view while reversing - are already available on some models, AAMI spokesman Geoff Hughes said.

“Tragically, there are far too many incidents each year where people – particularly small children – are injured or even killed because they couldn’t easily be seen by the operator of a four-wheel drive vehicle,” Mr Hughes said.

But the majority of survey respondents said 4WDs should not even be on the road.

About 60 per cent of drivers said the larger vehicles did not belong in cities.

About 33 per cent said, because of the vehicles greenhouse gas emissions alone, 4WDs were socially unacceptable to drive.

Two-thirds of respondents said the larger vehicles were dangerous for drivers and 56 per cent said registration fees should be higher for 4WDs.

“Our increasingly congested roads in the major cities and built up areas are obviously giving some drivers cause for resenting their four-wheel drive counterparts who take up more space simply because of their size,” Mr Hughes said.

“However we would remind all road users of the need to exercise patience and to remember that 4WDs have as much right to roads as other registered vehicles.”

The best part that I like is the comment about "4WDs should not even be on the road"

So why buy a 4wd if you are not going to take it off road??

Is it because they feel safer in a larger car when they drive around the city, or do they just like showing off a little bit to say see I could go off road if I wanted to..

And what are people thoughts of the have a rear camera on all 4WD's will it help or not???

Well for my money a reversing camera is an essential safety item in any car.

Why do people buy 4X4's for onroad use? Well possibly due to the cargo area that allows for multiple prams to be taken. Some people like the idea of a people mover but don't like the idea of their legs being amputated by a front on accident.

The 4wds are not only the cars with the bad rear vision. I think current or previous model holden commodore is as bad as a Prado....

I sort of fixed my rear vision problem by parking my car in such a way
so I don't have to reverse out

Yep, exactly why I've just bought one. I have no intention in regularly going off road.... just yet anyway

Yep ... my last 2 cars were a VS and a VX Commodore ..... and the Prado has better rear vision than both of them.

Glad I fitted the reverse camera it gives me a clear view of what is behind .

With the camera on caravan too this is also another part of essential equipment for any vehicle.

When I got the Prado the first accessory I bought and installed was a reversing camera and hooked it up to the sat nav display. It is so much easier and safer when reversing and convenient for hooking up a trailer. Obviously you should still check around the car before getting in but actually being able to see obstacles whilst reversing is a god send. No more guesswork.

In my opinion all cars should have them whether they are 4wds or small cars. Rear visibility varies dramatically in all vehicle classes with many common cars like VE commodore and Corolla effective no better than the Prado. Go check the NRMA website http://www.nrma.com.au/pub/nrma/moto...ty/index.shtml for testing and results of many popular cars. The two clear things from the tests are that the best cars in all categories have reversing cameras and that there are poor cars in all categories.

              Hope this helps.

I've driven many different vehicles and the Prado has with out a doubt provided me with the best rear vision of them all. I use to dread having to reverse park simply because of vision problems, in the prado I put it places I wouldn't even attempt to park other cars we have owned.

I agree but hey why are all Car manufactures are designing cars that are harder to see all round I mean take in the brand new corralla , when looking in front you cant even tell where the front is exactly due to the steep curve over the bonnet and look at 80% of cars have serious blind spots such as front pillars and rear side i dont understand why we cant have better side mirrors and go back to the classic days old cars you see better all round such as the Triumph sedan,s

I agree all cars such have some object detection sensor at rear section of vehicle thats connects to buzzer this way no matter what it is you know there somethinge there!! at the end of the day car manufacturer are worried about cost and I,ll bet object detection sensor will be cheaper than actual cameras

I Dont blame 4wd for this problem and after all NRMA did some research and testing and most of the 4wd had better view than majority of cars

This is an age old argument and one that will never go away!

Each to their own..... But don't knock it till you try it....

I must admit, the reverse camera is a pretty bloody good tool...

One of the main uses apart from 4WDing is for towing boats and other things. There is lots of reef boats around this city and most are towed by a large 4WD. I could not imagine trying to pull a heavy boat out of the water on a slippery ramp with a commodore.
I know my Prado goes lots of places with a boat in the rear view mirror.
The big fourbies are pretty handy up this way in a good wet season when the highway gets cut in lots of places too.
I think rear view cameras should be mandatory also.

I saw this article at work. I actually sat there and read all 117 replies to the post. I could not beleive how narrow minded, uneducated and naive the replies were (apart from a few). I am not at all being biased towards the good old fourby here, but as some have mentioned already, modern sedans are as bad as, if not worse for rear view vision.

I currently drive a VZ Commy and my work car is a VE Commy. The VE is the worst vehicle for rear vision that I have ever experienced. The only reason I know where the back of my VZ is is because of the spoiler.

If people struggle to see past a "big, burly" fourby, then sit back another vehicle length and you can see around the thing. These same people probably can't see past a fourby, because they're mere inches from it's rear bumper.

As you can probably tell, this is a topic that infuriates me

I feel better now that I've got that off of my chest....

Rear view cameras,.. they are on my to-do list. I think they are a good thing and will be standard on all new vehicles in a few years.

Shouldn't be on the road????? get real, they are smaller than a commodore, and in somecases more economical aswell (pradoV6 vs V6commy)

And being a 1 Prado, 1 bike familiy I should end up even if they worked road taxs by weight. What I would lose with the "heavy" prado, I would pick up with the light weight bike.

And comments like "some drivers cause for resenting their four-wheel drive counterparts who take up more space simply because of their size" should be left unsaid...

But all that might be directed at larger than the Prado type 4X4's. Like effies etc. What next
Or are they going to ban WRX's.... or all wheel drive audi's
If I could post a smilie of tossers i would.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

The small children line yet again. They never let up do they. Actually, I think the forward visibility in the Prado is the best I've come across. Even without a reversing camera, if you set the nice big Prado wing mirrors correctly you can get very good visibility behind you. You actually need to learn to use the wing mirrors though. Maybe the majority of the respondents to that survey think they are handbag holders or something. Add a reversing camera and your rear visibility would be second to none. Fact is, hit someone with a 4X4 or Huyundai Getz and they're going to be injured, the type of vehicle doesn't matter. Stats can also be tweaked to say anything. I'll just "leave out" all those people who said Beige Volvo's were the most dangerous vehicles on the road.......
