  • First "hardcore" 4WD trip

Just come back from my first "Grade 3-4" 4WD trip with Canobolas 4WD club- unbelievable

My pretty much stock standard Prado stayed at base camp whilst these nutters in heavily lifted trucks with "Centipede" tyres, straight axles, air-lockers and everything else tackled unimaginable tracks around Lithgow.

For those who have not tasted full-on 4WDing its a real eye opener! Some of the trucks/drivers I just spent the weekend with will be competing in next months Tuff Truck comp.....

    Here's a quick video.

I still love my Prado - but these older "worked" vehicles were heaps of fun!

      Here's a few pics too...

      1) replacing a CV halfway up a mountain!

      2) my prado stayed at camp!

Hi Samo. Just put Cooper's ATR's on the Prado but those alone were not going to get me where these blokes were going!

Twin locks and good throttle control will get you up that hill. I'm not an expert but I have driven my 120 on harder tracks than the ones shown in the photo.

That first pic looks like where i work.
As in, lots of ppl watchin.
But just curios, is that bottle jack and the pile of rocks the only thing stopping the car fall on that guys head???????
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

            Awesome!
It's heaps of fun hey, especially when you're in someone else's 4-by and you know that if it breaks on a grade 4 or 5, you aren't the one who has to fork out the cash for repairs!!!!!!

Let the tyre pressures down a bit, even on all terrains, and you'll be amazed at where you'll be able to poke the prado, so will all the big rig driver's - trust me!!!!
If all else fails they can snatch or winch you out of the proverbial anyway!!!

Anyway, a few mates and myself are keen to go on the powerline track some time this year near lithgow. The boys reckon it's got it's hairy sections - have you been down there or taken the prado on that track? What's it like?

Also our local club is going to 'landcruiser mountain 4WD park' 8) near towoombah QLD over easter long weekend. Grades go from 1 -5 so it caters for all skill levels and car setups so maybe that's another good club trip you might like to suggest to the powers that be!

Glad to hear your getting out amoungst it and having a blast! 8)

            Cheers

            Mick

Wengnuts that 2nd photo probably doesn't do it justice, but I take your point.

see the rock ledge everybody is sitting on in the first photo. Thats almost a metre vertical tall.....when the cv was fixed....up it crawled....over that wall! Not saying a suitably modified Prado could not do it. Just would not want to even attempt some of the stuff these blokes did in a $50000 vehicle.

And Jeff s, yes had the thing supported on a jack and pile of rocks. There were times my heart was in my mouth but these blokes (most of them mechanics) really had faith in themselves and their vehicles.

Yeah mick we did Powerline or something, and another one called pipeline. Mate some of the tracks were absolutely awesome. Broke several cv's and popped several tyres off the beads.

                Here's another video.....

                awesome fun.

Photos and even videos rarely do justice to a difficult hill. I've been to some really challenging stuff, and looking back at the photos it looks like a walk in the park. You've gotta be there! Besides, when the GQ's are breaking CV's you have to have some really good cards in hand if you're going to try doing the same thing in a prado!

I love my prado too, but it ain't no tough truck! It will go a lot further than most people expect it to, though, and it'll sometimes rock-crawl further than hilux's and other more iconic 4wd's, but... yeah...

I still do test its limits tho! A couple of weeks ago I got my prado stuck on the same rock that my mate with a GQ shorty, dual locked, with dual transfers and 35" beadlocked muddies got stuck on! Ahhh, lots of fun!

PS: I'm not disagreeing with any of the above comments!
