  • Formal 4x4 training

I would be interested to know how many members have done formal 4x4 training. Not to embarrass any who haven't or to suggest that having 'on the job training' is not appropriate.

I did mine in February with my Southern Tablelands 4WD Club on our own property. The trainers were all volunteers and very experienced. One on one. No cost - as part of my membership.

The training was over two days with two overnights at our property near Bredbo in Southern NSW. I couldn't believe that they had all 13 of us drive in at night over fire trails and quite rough terrain. What a great introduction. I was towing a 1.2t Cub trailer.

The final day was a week later and in the Brindabella's - a lot harder putting everything we had learned the week before in more difficult circumstances.

I was pleased to be given a certificate saying I passed.

Yep did mine with TLCC, highly recommended, formally recognised qualification. Amazing what a relatively stock vehicle can actually do.

Yep also did mine with our club, I would highly recommend it to everyone. I actually went one step further and went through te process of becoming an accredited trainer. For reasons that don't matter I chose not to finish that course, which I sort of regret as it would be a nice qualification.

      Cheers Andrew

I'm keen to do some training, but so far haven't been able to find a well recommended club or instructor in or around Sydney Town.

We are doing a course in two weeks. Gonna do the beach course first as we spend more time there and then do a bush one later on. Should be good, looking forward to learning some more things about 4wding safely.
          Cheers

No training yet but I'm thinking of joining the Gold Coast 4wd club and the membership fee includes a training session. I'm quite confident on the beach but would like more training in bush and recoveries.

I learned most of my 'knowledge' here on Pradopoint. Lots of trips with lots of knowledgeable people. Going on the Get Togethers expanded that knowledgbase as well.
I did an official 4wd course 2 years ago with http://www.australianoffroadacademy.com.au and found the real would experiences of all the people around me was good... but, a formal training session covering technique and recovery was a real eye opener and invaluable experience.

Oh, and if you want to learn what NOT to do... just go on a forum trip with 4wd Action or the Outerlimits 4wd forum.
They were two trips I'm glad I don't have to go through again.

x2. I did the ubiquitous bush course that I think most offer, it's there bread & butter.I actually wanted to do more advanced one's but no one ever came back due to no demand! You have to really set up a group of friends or join a club to utilise these courses or join a mining company that pays for it/has a need. No point being 'knobby no mates'! There a good start thou!

The wife and I both completed the Vic Widman 2 day begineers course (nationally recognised) at his property down Braidwood way. That was in early 2009 about 6 months after buying the car. Would like to go back and go the advanced course one day to iron out any bad habits.

Yep ive done some training and feel it helps a lot.

Everyone should (formally) learn the basics I think.... especially recovery training with qualified trainers.
                      Cheers

I did mine with 4WD Off Road Driver Training on their property which is out on the road to Wombeyan Caves near Mittagong in NSW

Ive done it twice, the first time in my manual 45 series troupy and the second in my auto 150 series Kakadu. Highly reccomended if you want to know what all the bells and whistles are for.

Getting your wife to do it also is an excellent idea, my wife did it at the same time as me and that's been hugely valuable. Firstly she now is a lot more comfortable when the going gets tricky, but more importantly a couple of times I've been sick / injured and she has had no choice but to take over. Once was on Blue Rag in the high country, the other on the Gunbarrel Hwy after thunder storms and flash flooding.

Mind you she now knows enough to point out any time that I do the slightest thing that's not by the book, swings and roundabouts hey
