Wonder which beach that was?
At the 2012 GTG when we were at Beachport I gave everyone a warning not to be tempted by the hard wet sand below high tide mark for exactly this reason. I know for some of the Queenslanders it seemed strange that we were driving in the soft stuff and ignoring the hard sand. It's a lesson for anyone driving South East SA beaches, stay high even if its soft.

Hey Rob. Years of 4x4 fun/abuse caught up with me on the snow trip when I busted the rear diff on a night run Friday night. Ripped 11 teeth off the ring gear and 6 off the pinion. Must have had a stress fracture cos it wasn't an overly tough track.Originally posted by MidLifeCrisis View PostWhat happened Ben?
Now on the hunt for a replacement to drop my lokka in and instal.
Cheers, Ben.

I have done a lot of Beach driving in my time, I stay out of the 'wet' stuff, but wherever possible I always drive on the compacted high tide mark, I have never heard of this. How does it occur, more importantly, how do you spot it?Rob

I don't really understand how it happens, there are just some spots on the South East beaches that you get the odd spot that goes like quicksand. As for spotting them, that's the problem, you cant. It looks just the same as the rest of the beach. You often see tyre marks down on the hard sand in the SE, most of the time you get away with it, but when you don't you loose your vehicle.
On the final recce for the 2012 GTG we ran into the Ranger at Beachport and he was telling us about one of their guys who lost a cruiser in one of these holes, he had been working the beaches for a few years and got complacent and took the "easy" way.

Rule number one on the beach: always go with a friend who can help with any recovery. Obviously he has no friends.Dave
