Good onya Fozzy, that's the way? You really need to tension the wire rope using a second vehicle or something like a tree.. then do what you do. A damper on the line also naturally really helps for safety issues. Holding it manually to try and tension is a poor second best but I dare say better than nothing resulting in the birdnesting pics above. I reckon winches are one of the most neglected items on a 4wd. I've an old steel Superwinch (OE) and it still going great but hardly ever ever use it.

Interesting talk about winching and winding back on drum.

Made me think of back in the day when every so often, our winch cat (as in snow cat) operator would spool out his cable on relativity flat ground and re-wind with no tension. I assisted in my non-winch cat as an anchor, and would usually jump into the winch cat, usually where I was given a shot to run the winch. The Pisten Bully Winch cats have a capstan roller set that would wind the cable back on the drum, so I have never seen one bunched up.

This is what I am talking about Click image for larger version

But I have also seen these cats pull anchors out. The below is a tree that a winching operation went wrong (no one was hurt).

I guess the addition of a capstan winder would add to the weight, cost, etc.
