  • What do you carry in your Prado when going off road

Hi all joined resently have a Prado on Order due May. As a new 4wd driver/user what would you consider as the minimum gear to carry when going off the bitumen. What are some of the none essensials that make life a little easier, and some luxuries.

The next question has to be should one do a 4x4 course to learn to drive off road.

I have done some dirt driving with a 2wd car not really off road so your views would be appreciated.

Live in Gladstone central queensland don't know of any training venues around here, we are considering joining the local 4x4 club

    Thanks in advance
    Mick

Joining a club is probably going to really help... I didn't, but I go with my (much more experienced) mates who got me into 4WD'ing in the first place, so if you have any of them then you don't have to join a club.

In a nutshell, you need recovery gear and tools. You at least need a snatch strap, shackles, and another vehicle to go with. You'll need more recovery gear if you go by yourself, but I really wouldn't recommend that until you've done a fair bit with others. By that time you'll know what gear you need!

Re: Tools, if you already know how to fix things on your car you probably know what you need, otherwise... enough to repair and change a tyre. A tyre pressure gauge is very useful - it really helps to let your tyres down when off road. An air compressor is nice to have, otherwise don't go too fast until you get to a petrol station.

For bigger trips spare parts may come in handy - belts, hoses and CV joints / axles. Then you'll need the tools to change them.

Also, it helps to have straps to tie all the gear in the boot down!

    Have fun!

Without a doubt do a 4x4 course or join a club as they also offer training, I will always remember 10yrs ago i got into 4wding and did a course straight up. After some theory we went to a old quarry and parked in front of what i called back then a shear cliff face, yeah right theres a track off too the side we must be stopping here for another talk. Nope 1st task was to drive half way up stall then do a stall reverse back down. Was a real eye opener at the capabilities of a 4x4.

Bare min. snatch strap, rated shackles, shovel and lots of enthusiasm

How about two way radio and mobile phone. Helps if someone gets really hurt. If you are really gonna be isolated hire a sat phone.

sorry to get all boring on you and get back on topic, but...

does anyone know if there are non-genuine belts and hoses available for the old 120 diesel (pre D4D). And details - where, what, how much??

The three belts (2 drive & 1 ac etc) will cost me about $90 from toyota and so I was wondering if I can get cheaper just for spares, in case...

                        (i tried a search)

I think Don Kyatt Spares in Kewdale Road does a package of belts and hoses for the 1KZTE motor now, not sure how much it costs though.

                              1. Condoms ... Just in case my luck changes while in the bush (4wd that is).

                              2. Rum .. if I have bad luck or no luck with no 1 . Or damage the prado while 4wd

                              3. Good bottle of Red wine .. can help with no 1 , but only if I don't have to much of no 2.
