For what it's worth I had a remote head Uniden in my first Prado, then when I bought the new D4D I got the GME remote head unit. For me I would have stuck with the Uniden. Clearer on RX and a much smaller mic, although the remote head unit is slightly bigger.

Most people rate the GME, I prefer the Uniden......just personal choice.

I believe the ICom is a cracker of a radio though. If you can your hands on a US model off ebay they are supposed to be brillant.

i have heard that. but for me, car to car radio, of like no more than a few hundred meters i can't justify the cost of an Icom.

but everywhere i look i hear they are THE radio.

The Icom i have is an amateur one. While you can buy them you are not supposed to be able to without an amateur licence. Mine has been um, adapted to work on UHF as well as amateur frequencies. It is a great unit.

As for Icom's normal UHF rig I have not used one, but all of their gear that I have is great.

              This is it.

                Uhf Radio

I have just fitted a Uniden with a remote head. Not sure of model number but is the latest model, came with a free aerial too. Fitted the remote head under the ash tray and screwed the bracket for the mic to one of the blanks to the left of the steering column. I also have a brake controller here as well and the coily lead sits on top of this so that it doesn't rub on your knee. The main body, which is tiny, I fitted iside the dash under the steering column. There is heaps of room here and pulling this panel out is easy. The speaker faces towards the driver but is not hard up against the plastic as there is a whole series of strengthening ribs inside. Only two screw heads are visible which I painted grey to neaten the job up.
The sound is well loud enough for two way comms but needs to be cranked up when listening to the cops if the Missus wants to hear as well.
I am sure that the sound could also be routed through the existing car speakers some way or maybe the fronts only, you would have to talk to a car sound expert.
The performance of this radio is excellent, the 6dB aerial gives me a maximum range of about 15ks. But range is dependent on aerial type and terrain. This I found does everything I want with car to car comms , talking to truckies, road side workers etc. We give the kids little 1 watt two ways when camping and we can call 'em up when needed even though they haven't got the grunt to transmit to us.-----Perfect. Also handy when you have to negotiate some difficult terrain, making the Cheese and Kisses investigate a muddy bog hole instead of you.
150 Vx D4D, Deluxe Arb bar, winch, Hayman Reece Towbar, UBP, P3 Tekonsha, 'n stuff.
"When cooking on a camp fire it must be cool enough to cook on so it needs to burn down to coals, at least in parts. It is customary to drink beer while waiting for the fire to cool down.
I recommend starting with a very big fire"-Vince.
