Correction - You can transport caravans trailers and camper trailers on freight trains under unaccompanied motorail with GSR

http://www.greatsouthernrail.com.au/...d_motorail.jsp, it clearly states under vehicle types carried caravans camper trailers and (subject to approval) and trailers.

Prices are also listed on the link depending on the length of your camper trailer it will cost you between $1448 worst case $1930. Melbourne to Darwin

End of the day enjoy the camper trailer when you finally get it

I recon you have probably got it all sorted by now, however lack of daylight will be your enemy. Katherine to Marla or even Coober Pedy on Wednedsay if you travel at a tick over 130. If you get 1st light starts, you'll get well past Adelaide on Thursday, and into Melbourne Friday morning easily. In SA, I would be sitting on around 115 to 120, but getting close to Pimba and South you need to be closer to the posted speed. Do NOT speed on the Dukes highway to Melbourne. You WILL get pinged.
Heading back will be a slower affair as I recon you won't want to be doing the same speeds dragging a camper. You can get around 14 hours of daylight VIC, to Adelaide, backing off to 12 hours north SA and NT. Use every bit of daylight you can and avoid the dark north of Pt Augusta if you can.
Take 10 minute naps if you feel drowsy. Speed's not the killer, fatigue is.

      Cheers

Contrary to the propaganda that most western politicians and police forces want to ram down our throats, speed of itself is very rarely responsible for collisions.

Inappropriate speed definitely, but that may be 40k. Most collisions are caused by poor driving standards, problem is that has to be policed with real police out on the streets which costs money. More revenue in cameras and stupid limits.

B.Col is on the money. I have done this trip a few times in the 120 on my own. 4 days, found 3 would be pushing it. Daylight driving only, off at 6ish am, in by 8/830ish pm. Melbs to Port Augusta, Port A to Coober Pedy, Coober to Alice/ Tennant Creek /Katherine, - Darwin & in reverse. 130kms max is where I felt comfortable, sun / horizon haze is a b^%$# for keeping an eye out ahead for animals on the road.

I got pinged in SA once, never again. Stick to the limits. Safe travels...

                  Hi Pauly85,

If you stuck to my plan or close to it, and not to the others regarding doing various speeds over 100kms/h, you may not have received your speeding fine!!

Anyway, take care and get home in one piece.

Speeding in Pt Augusta.....Ouch. Old rule (that I didn't mention) is to stick to the limit 30km either side of a town.

Stuart, I'm one of the guilty parties advocating a touch of lead in foot, but lead of foot north of Pt Augusta. "Stay close to the posted limit.....
Paulie, Sorry, all care no responsibility.

                    Safe travels

A fines never nice to get. And worse when it cost so much.
I was over taking a car in a 100 zone. I myself thought it was a 110 zone. I think the cop was out to get me with NT plates anyway. He had the fine written up before he could put the speed gun away.
Apart from that it was a great trip.
Head down was Darwin - SA Border- Kaniva (VIC) - Melbourne.
Head back was much harder. Averaged 110 the whole way back. Melbourne - 200km north Port Augusta - Threeway (Tent Creek) - Darwin.
And I would do it again tomorrow. Geez I must be mad........

                      Cheers

Remember the SA government is in dire need of finances. That is why so much emphasis is put on revenue raising by SAPOL rather than fighting real crime.
