How about putting some spacer blocks under the Rhino accessory bar?
I would remove the platform, leaving the legs and fit the traditional crossbars on. At least, you won't be adding height to the pod and reducing weight at the same time.
Or what about bolting through the existing hole in the pod and into the accessory bar using channel nuts in the bar? What does the inside of the Thule pod look like and what is the clamping system?

Thanks for the response amts. The inside of the Thule system has a slot with a rubber guard for each of the clamping legs to poke through. The whole clamp mechanism comes out so it might be possible to bolt the unit to the platform directly. My only concern would be getting the bolt tight enough so the pod is stable at speed, but not so tight that it would damage the plastic base of the shell (so I assume I'll need to spread the load somehow).
